Recently my 2004 4Runner (limited v8 AWD/4x4) has started making an odd noise under the dash on the drivers side, maybe like down under the steering wheel somewhere. It’s constant whether the vehicle is moving or still.

the noise is like 2 parts, 1. There’s like a random (not a steady beat) clicking noise and 2. also like an electronic ‘gurgling’ sound… and by that I mean at first I thought it was like coolant running through a hose where maybe there was some air in the hose too, but then the clicking started so I think it’s electronic. It almost sounds like there is some electronic equipment/actuator under there trying to do something but it can’t.

I tried taking a video to capture the sound but the phone mic couldn’t pick up the noise well enough over the sound of the vehicle just running.

noise doesn’t change if I turn on hvac or not. Was gonna start poking around but if anyone knows of anything under the dash I might start looking at first that would be a great help.

The Limited has the Dual Zone HVAC system, which means there is a actuator under the driver's side, which could be starting to make noise but still working, other than that the only thing that comes to mind is the ABS/master cylinder electric motor.

Awesome thanks for the heads up at least this is a good starting point. Of course I went out today to listen more closely and it wasn’t doing it. Go figure.

I have a 04 limited V8 with the exact same sound, had the sound for years, tried to pinpoint with a stethoscope to no avail. If you can figure this out i would love know. Whenever I bring it in for a service of course it does not make the noise, HELP!

I’ve done some YouTube research but can only find videos replacing the two passenger side servos, nothing yet showing anything on the drivers side.

Lots with more in the works
Check this post and see if it helps you guys out any. I have the same servo that has been noisy for years now and haven't done anything about it yet. HVAC system still works, so it hasn't been high priority for me.
