    Maybe it was just a manufacturing defect. If I was looking forward to a Gen 6 4Runner I'm not sure this would inspire confidence. Axle shaft snapped and it wasn't even a high traction scenario. Many people will be putting 33's on these trucks so I sure hope it was just an odd defect.

    The tire size came to my mind as well. Stock tires, on a little bit of snow, and 'pop'. Hopefully just a one-off situation.

    Hrmmm. . . I'd be wary about the durability of the front components now. Maybe they are weaker than previous gen? Don't buy a first gen anything. Let a few years roll by so they figure out what breaks or is complained about.

    OH THE SHAME. . . A Colorado had to tow it out.

    I wonder if they use same welding process / material for 4th gen Tacoma.

    From 3rd gen recall: "Welding debris left on the ends of the rear axles could cause some nuts to loosen over time before falling off, resulting in another part separating from the axle, according to Toyota, which said vehicle stability and brake performance could be affected if the part falls off."

    That break seemed a lot like cv axles breaking on a locked front differential. I wonder if the ATrac is programmed to be a bit too aggressive.

    I’d hate to think that was the differential breaking.

    Your speculation of snapped axle shaft is likely wrong. The CV axles were beefed up for 4th gen. Plus the TFL characters saw nothing obvious dangling on the trail.

    It'll be interesting once they inspect it on a lift. The transfer case and front diff are derivatives from 3rd gen Taco (and 2020+ 4R).

    I don't think the higher torque of the 2.4L is to blame. Foreign market Prados have diesel engines with more torque, and they use the same front diff.

    Interesting. Good point, they might share a lot of mechanical components, but the differences (like the magnetic ADD actuator) could be to blame. This will be a neat mystery to follow.

    Unrelated, but did anybody else find the sound of the turbo spooling under load as cool as I did? I could get used to that lol.

    The driver gave a vibe of weak respect for the spotter, and the spotter gave a vibe of being used to that from him. The circumstances probably amplified it. After all, he just broke his truck and seemed like he was putting some effort into self-regulation.

    Looks like Roman lost composure after the break. If I hadn't followed the channel for many years, from the video I'd get the impression they're all newbs to wheeling.

    They were balls out rocking the trd pro at the press event. That held up well… but yeah this is worrying me about gen 6. May have to just pull trigger on a Terra 24 runner instead of waiting

    Like others have said, could easily have been user error. We will have to wait and see. I am surprised they haven't updated it yet.

    They weren’t being any dumber than the average dude in a truck. Sure they aren’t brilliant overlanders but come on, if “user error” is that easy and detrimental, it’s a delicate vehicle and detriment to the “bullet proof” method Toyota has built for Tacoma and 4runners

    They posted an update. They talked with Toyota chief engineer and mechanics.

    It was a failure of a part inside the front differential.

    ADD automatic differential disconnect has a part that is designed to fail under certain conditions. The Toyota engineers think maybe that is the part which broke and that it wasn't supposed to under these conditions.

    They were told 20 people at Toyota are working on this problem to get to the bottom of it.

    What they were doing should not have snapped anything. It's not like he revved the engine with a wheel in the air and came slamming down in a high traction situation. I do hope it was just a manufacturing defect in a part otherwise there's no way I'd even consider a 2024 Taco or 6th gen Runner.

    The ADD failed in the front differential which doesn't exactly inspire confidence.

    Takes time to get to the bottom of these things.

    First they have to take it to mechanic or Toyota dealership, then wait until whenever the mechanic can look at it.

    And even though these guys have direct access to Toyota Engineer Team for feedback, that also takes time. No way Toyota going to say anything until they figure out definitively what went wrong. That might mean having a certified mechanic take it apart and send the team some shorts, or if Toyota is truly that interested in this mishap, flying an engineer out to see it first hand. That could also take some time.

    They posted the initial vid 7 days ago, and posted a follow-up today.

    Not necessarily. Did you see the point in the video where they stated the Colorado and Canyon trucks have been put on a 'stop sale' by GM?

    Not a glowing endorsement for the new Tacoma, though.

    I really hope this is just a fluke but the new Tundra has had myriad issues. This does not bode well for the 6th gen 4runner.

    Toyota has fallen. I'm convinced. Their trucks have gotten worse in regards to engine/trans/drivetrain.

    Engine leaks, especially timing covers on multiple models. 3.5 2GR engine failures left and right, rear ends howling, the list goes on.

    I actually embrace the turbo 4 banger. But if the rest of the truck can't handle a simple incline in the snow, I'll never buy a new Toyota again.

    It’s sort of a shame really overall everyone is flopping. Ford and the new Bronco release not so great obviously, GM and stop sale on Colorado/Canyon on an overhaul, then Toyota issues with new Tundra, and now it appears the overhauled Tacoma issues.

    If I were an exec at toyota I’d say pencils down boys and girls. Let’s make the tundra and Tacoma issues go away first. No new product launches until all the other launches are hitch free. They risk the public losing confidence in the name brand if every new product launch has issues right now. I would not want to see toyota has new recall in the press every week.

    There is an old saying…..it can take years to gain a customer and only minutes to lose one…so tread lightly.

    I would pause the new 4R launch right now if it were me.

    Saw on another forum, apparently there are 1000's of Tacomas on QC hold for silent recall, and have been since before these guys broke this part?

    Also, apparently front differential is a carry over from the 3rd gen.

    ^Yep, needle bearing and all. And the transfer case is a derivative model: 3rd gen and 2020+ 4R use VF2CM. 4th gen use VF2DM.
