    Why you should avoid the first year of a new generation. The stock Taco in stock form just couldn't handle it. And here I am banging my 4Runner on 34s and ton of steel, and it doesn't care.

    I am always disappointed in their videos. I am a sucker for 4Runner videos on YT but even my kid tells me “dad that’s clickbait, don’t watch it!”. Last year when we didn’t get know about LC, they made several such videos where all they did was talk a lot, but little to no new info given at the end.

    Yep. Much harder to meet net zero goals and reduce your carbon footprint with a large displacement engine. The engines have to get smaller to meet new goals.

    TRD Jon just bought one, he traded in his Lime Rush TRD Pro for it. He did a 15 hour road trip to pick it up and compared the two. He got about 5mpg better with the new one, and he said it was almost criminal how much better the new engine is compared to the 3.5. He said in areas where the 3.5 was screaming at 4K to hold speed, the 2.4 was just cruising at 2k.

    They're not really "influencers", they skew more towards being actual reviewers and journalists. This isn't like Whistlindiesel breaking one.

    Not everyone on YT is a ticktock style "influencer", there's actually some fantastic content on YT that rivals anything on Netflix, etc.

    I was in a similar situation a few months back while wheeling with a new Bronco. We specifically stuck to greens and blues to avoid anything too technical, but ran into an area that was deceptively muddy, and the Bronco got stuck. While trying to back out of it, SNAP, and no front drive. We were both surprised, he was a non-Squatch on 32s and not hammering on it at all.

    I was able to snatch him out with my 4R, and when he got it to the dealer it turns out it was a blown front diff.

    I agree that there's some great content on YouTube.

    But, I watched most of the video, waiting for an explanation as to what happened, and they spent more time talking about what they're going to talk about in their next video than providing any useful information. That video could have been about 5 minutes. The rest of it was filler.

    I agree about fantastic content on YT. I follow a kayak angler who produces really good stuff. But TFL guys….seem to talk a lot without giving too much info on their videos. At least that’s what it seems to me.

    Fair point, I also felt it was longer than necessary. My big takeaway was actually how cringe the "recovery" was, and that they're never really well prepared for off-road mishaps.

    Pretty sure that Tacoma snapped an axle shaft. IMO, unless it’s a “lightning strike” type event where it’s really one off failure, it doesn’t bode well for the new Tacoma or the redesigned 4R.

    I’m on my second 4R with the 4.0. I wouldn’t buy the new Tundra or the new 4R until the mid model refresh. The redesigned Tundra rollout has been a disappointment by any measure and I expect the 4R redesign will have significant initial quality issues as well. I assume Toyota will work out the big kinks in 3-5 years. Even so, I don’t think any of the new iron will be as reliable/durable as the old school 4R, Tundras, or Land Cruisers.

    It’ll be interesting to find out for sure. That “snap” sound, to me at least, seems to point towards axle issues or u joints. Just my own wild guesses tho.

    I had a little time after work and decided to go check one of these out. I must say it was much nicer than my 2nd gen Taco. Comfy, and quiet. And, glorious midrange torque! I'm almost regretting it, because I kinda want one of them now. :anonymous:

    Our frontends are our(IFS) biggest weakness. Just be careful out there. 4Runner is solid but IFS is not.

    Yeah, that's why I'm trying to stick with a fairly lightweight tire.

    And when I recovered the Bronco, I told him. I'd try to get him out as best I can, but this thing's 10 years old with 160k on it, I'm not going to hammer on it. It was the first time I had used a kinetic rope and my ARB snatch strap (we had to connect those and a standard strap together to get enough length to keep me out of the mud), the actual pull was incredibly soft.

    I try to drive with a light foot, and I actually recently purchased a winch and I'd much rather pull cable than deal with a broken CV. I'm not too proud to know when to quit.

    Really? Even with stock size tires, mine is back and forth from 4th and 5th quite a bit. Even a headwind will make it down shift in certain areas.

    I’m starting to wonder the same thing, if maybe it was not fully engaged when turbo started to roll baby coal. He didn’t really seem super sure about what he was doing with the selector dial.

    Well, if theirs spit out the synchro ring, they would have been still able to easily engage 4wd. Without the synchro, my broken TC was buttery smooth to shift between 2 and 4wd. You just had to be completely stopped. It also still worked in 4wd and 4lo as normal.

    Judging from the front end dropped when it unloaded, something broke, or the add slipped (if that’s a thing).

    First 4th gen Taco to be wheeled somewhat seriously. 35" Nittos fit with very minimal work once the correct offset wheels were used:

    All 4WD 4th gen Taco trims have A-Trac working in the background in 4-low with no switch to turn it on. I don't know if he was in 4-low in all the off road footage.
