    Hey gang,

How many of you allowed your child to learn to drive and take the road test with your rig?

I made her drive every chance she got since she was going away for college. I had the magnetic placards..."STUDENT DRIVER" on the rig.

Several ppl applauded me at the grocery store for allowing her to drive my rig...LOL!!

    Happy to report, she PASSED!!

Now...she claims she is more comfortable driving the 4runner than the other smaller vehicles we own.

No kids here, but I grew up in the era of one-car families, so I learned to drive on the only car we had. Anyway, congratulations to your daughter and thanks for giving her the opportunity to enjoy a great vehicle.

Back in the day I had a Chevy Suburban with a 6" lift with 36" tires. That's what my son learned to drive in.

I’m all for learning how to drive on something larger, it’s what my parents did for me. My dad was a contractor so I drove his dodge maxi cargo van every chance I could get. Then to stack the odds in my favor, he went down to the local Suzuki dealer and took a 24hour test drive of the little tiny car they used to have decades ago. Took my test in that and passed with flying colors!

But the experience of driving that giant van gave me a ton of confidence in driving damn near anything.

I learned to drive on a Buick Park Avenue...huge 4 door sedan...so driving anything smaller is easy.

That was my thinking for my daughter...learn to drive the rig...and she will find driving anything else easy.

Well, it worked too well...LOL!! I think she's a 4runner girl for life!!

    Good job dad and congrats!

So far I've taught 5 kids and one grandson in whatever vehicle I've had at the time. My fiance' has never driven before, and she's 46 now. She'll get to America in August so I'll teach her in the 4Runner and other vehicles.

My daughter learned to drive our 1989 Isuzu Trooper with a five speed manual transmission since I didn't want her driving my 1973 BMW 2002 tii and the Trooper became her high school car. Never hurts to know how to drive a manual tranny although they are becoming more and more rare.

Same. I made sure both my daughters learned to drive on my standard transmission Taco, before letting them drive an automatic. I believe everyone should learn on a stick.

Mine is learning to drive with the Tundra and now the Tacoma.

Bigger the car they learn on the better. Can't stick them in a small ass Corolla and expect them to drive everything. They gonna cut corners and think they can squeeze everywhere if they lean on a small car.

I learned with a Civic Hatchback and I know I was uncomfortable driving bigger cars at first.

I think its a great idea. If she can handle that rig, she can drive anything.

i learned how to drive in my buddys dads 4 speed 70 Chevelle with a worked 350 and 4.10 gears.

    Yep...I agree.

The day before her road test...she want to practice parallel parking on my rig. We spent 3 hours and must have found over 20 parking spaces...she did excellent. Proud papa!!;)

    PHML, Congrats to your Daughter!.
I taught my Niece, 19, to drive a manual trans. It was in my '93 Toyota P/U.
The way I taught her was the same way that my Dad taught me in his '70 Toyota P/U. Disconnect the throttle cable and learn clutch pedal control first.

Again Congrats Miss, more power to ya.

Kudos to you for doing that. It shows great trust between the two of you and her care for the vehicle.

I remember after I got my license driving my Dads Ford Escort and Taurus my Grandfather put me in the drivers seat of Ford Econoline Full size van hooked up 20ft Wellcraft boat and said let’s go. We went to the church parking lot he put out some cones and said now boy back tbis boat up in between those cones! Great experience. Two days later we drove on I75 to upper Michigan with the boat and he said drive us four hours north and let’s go fishing. Those were the days.

Here’s to you Pop for taking a chance on the kid

Bad idea. New drivers not very good at road situations judgment. You get ready for many minor repairs at body shop. Young inexperienced drivers cannot feel dimensions of car or big SUV. And of course texting, even glancing on a screen, young people just cannot resist not to. Buy used Corolla.

theres a lot of inexperienced driver no matter what age. My son woke up yestersay to this damage at his town home. Next door neighbor, male, driving a Mazda 6 back out of his driveway right into the driver rear quarter panel behind the wheel. My sons car was across the street a good 40-50’ away from his driveway.

I concur. Officially hijacked my thread.
Every new driver is different. The goal was to start her off on the rig, so that any other vehicle would be easy. It worked!! She drove the GLK350 and E350, and said it was easy to drive.

It's nice to have first car Toyota 4Runner, but in a family of GLK350 and E350 the better choice for the first car would be G550, don't you think?

I learned to drive tractors when i was 8 years old. Was pulling trailers of hay all over my grandfather's farm before i was a teenager. My dad made me drive his old Dodge van for a year before i got my learner's permit. I do think learning to drive something larger is easier and transitions to a smaller size better. I can jump in just about anything and park it anywhere even today. I can park my girlfriend's Audi parallel with my eyes closed and i might drive it 3 times a year.

That's cool that you let your daughter drive your rig, probably an experience she won't forget.
