When coming to a quick stop, like when a traffic light changes & you have to stop quickly, thereis a feeling like I am being rear ended after the stop is complete. I am thinking the overdrive is kicking down but it is happening more often & I have never experienced this before. Any idea’s?

This is a common sensation when the rear drive shaft slip joint becomes
dry and needs to be greased.

I had the same “getting slightly rear ended” feeling. It was the rear driveshaft slip-yoke.

That’s my bet, and it’s the cheapest thing to try first. That said, it can take a little bit of finesse to get them fully greased without overpacking the slip yoke.

It has 119k on it now. I will lube the slip yoke first. Thanks for the replies.

I’ve got the same problem on my 1st gen Tacoma. I greased all the joints and yokes and it still does it.

Put the transmission in neutral while slowing down and stopping,
that way the trans downshifting won't be a factor. Check all the suspension
bushings for wear. For diagnosis purposes you could remove the rear drive
shaft and drive it in 4x4 and see if eliminates the issue. If it does, you might
disassemble the slip joint and clean and lube it good. But remember to mark
the two sides so you can put it back together correctly.

    Thank you!

That’s the best advice I’ve received in a long time. :)

Grease all of the fitting on your driveline. That should help

not a lot of grease, like 3-4 pumps max.

That sounds like axle wrap. I had it too on my first gen.

Axel wrap on a linked suspension?!? Leafs yes, which the 1st gen tacos have. 5th gen 4runner has no leafs, so ujoints or slip yoke are the likely excessive movement parts.

Axle wrap on the 1st gen Tacoma, which is why I quoted that post.
