I ran the specs on "willtheyfit.com" (20x7, +15mm offset, 245/60 tires versus 17x8, 0 offset, 285/70 tires). Basically that extra inch in wheel width is all going outwards from your existing wheel. The 285 is also about an inch bigger in overall diameter. An inch doesn't sound like much, but it could mean the difference between clearing and rubbing.

You're saying that "An inch doesn't sound like much, but it could mean the difference between clearing and rubbing." in this case, the 285s on the FN 17x8s are likely to rub at lock... right?

I think 285s on any size wheel are going to rub without a lift, probably not even at full lock. But I've seen videos where folks just heat up the plastic where it rubs, and use the wooden handle on a hammer to push it far enough in so it doesn't rub anymore. Me personally, I think 285s will look too big without a lift.

The plan is 1” up front. And, I figured the fender liner would need an adjustment. More and more, dropping to 275s is looking like the easiest path.

275 is a good option but you may be stuck with E load range tires with that size.
Another option is skinny 33's. This is popular for many reasons. I personally don't love the look, and I want as much flotation as possible.

Keep in mind a lift will not keep you from rubbing during articulation. Only trimming and clearancing will keep you from rubbing.
Don't be too disuaded by that though. A body mount chop is cheap and simple. Pushing and trimming your fender liners is easy.

Once you do these things you can run 33's on most wheels without issue. Rubbing is a big deal on the internet and I've never understood why. Trim and clearance. Job done.
    Move onto bigger things.

    Thanks @1SilverRunner!

Yeah, the 1" up front is mainly so the 285s or 275s don't look out of place. And, I'm not sweating the liner (super easy) or BMC (I got a guy!) too much... it's the stance I'm so laser focused (obsessing) on.

I feel that. I come from the sports car world and always preferred meaty race tires appose to the hella flush crowd. Did a lot of research before committing to the RRW's on the 4R

As you mentioned @1SilverRunner, there are very few C-rated 275s. I have E-rated 275/70/18s on my Land Cruiser and they're fine, but it's got 1,000 pounds on the 4Runner. I do think I want to stick with C-rated for the 4Runner.

Yea plus 285/70/17 is a pretty common size if you ever need a replacement.
I think the FN FX 17x8 wheels and some aggressive 285/70/17s would be a great upgrade for you If you want to stick with OEM style wheels. They are very reasonably priced as well.

Just be ready to trim if needed.

Yokohama has a C rated 275 but 55lbs a tire seems like too much of an increase to me
