    Hi,

New member from Edmonton Canada here, just joined. I recently bought a 2nd gen 1991 4runner. Its not pretty or perfect, but it seems pretty solid. 560,000K on the odometer, was told it has had 3 timing belts in its lifetime so far.

    upload_2024-2-25_10-56-38.jpg

    The good:

    Seems solid
    Starts
    Drives
Passed the safety inspection (needed a windshield)
Power windows, locks, sunroof, stereo, cruise, all seem to work great

Some items I want to fix that I would appreciate your comments on:

The back bumper is missing. My brother welded something together that we slapped on for the safety, but still keeping an eye out for something better. If anyone knows of a good aftermarket one?

The spare tire bracket is off the truck, would like to put back on. There was some body work done so there's no mounting holes for the bracket, need to drill some I think. Has anyone done this before, or should I take to a shop?

The front end seems pretty good according to safety mechanic, but did mention I might want to think about new tie rods in the future. I found a local classified where someone has an entire new front end parts, said he paid over $900, asking only $500. Thinking about picking this up for the spares and for the rods. Question, if you had all brand new parts, would you hold onto them until the ones on the truck need replacing? Or would you just swap to all brand new and keep anything old as a backup?

Engine, or I think more specifically, cooling system is noisy. I read a few things that suggested 2nd gens may just be loud? Another one suggested fan clutch (does kind of remind me of a jet taking-off, but the fan will get louder and quieter as I accelerate).

Burns a little oil. Not sure what to do about it, or if anything can be done. Will just keep a litre with me and keep it topped up I guess.

The gas cover doesn't shut. I can see the little latch for the cover is stuck, and the lever/cable part in the cab seems a little mangled, it was turned 90deg from how its supposed to sit. Haven't really looked beyond this to see what else might be up.

Overall, I'm happy to be a 4runner owner and it seems like a pretty decent little truck that I think I will get quite a bit more life out of. May even one day consider swapping to a 5vz or 22RE.

Hood sticks when opening, not a big deal to me, but maybe someone has a tip.

Happy to be here, thanks for having me!

    Oooh look, another mod.....

Welcome aboard! For rear bumpers, I think something like this would look great on your truck (you may want to powder coat it or spray it with bed liner spray):

Wow, 560K miles, I’d say your a head of the game there buddy. Nothing like a cool project restoring a true classic T4R. Welcome to the forum!

    Thanks all!

Sorry DesertSurfer, I was in metric, not miles, 560,000KM same as 350,000 miles, but still pretty high up there! I want to drive this thing past 560K miles though! (900,000KM+ in metric)
