    Update

Caps are supposed to be on. The new TRD Pro wheels apparently have a stop sale on them and no Toyota has not said why.

    Soooo yeah.

Hmm, interesting. I wonder if there's been a bad batch of it this is related to the center cap shortage? I've seen here on the board that even brand new 2024 TRD Pro's are coming with the order style Pro wheels.

Did you say something earlier about not being able to use the stock lug nuts? That seems relevant, as if the wheel isn't seating properly. That could also be consistent with a manufacturing defect on the wheels.

Man. That's fu*ked. I'm not even sure how that's legal. THERE'S A KNOWN PROBLEM! Hope it can be made right. Sorry you have to go through that.

Well it was all Toyota parts, but still agree if they shouldn't be selling them I shouldn't have been sold the wheels.

That could be a theory. The stock chrome ORP lug nuts worked perfectly on my Pro wheels while I waited for the black lug nuts.

    Lug nuts seem fine.

Just saw the sales guy I bought it from, he's going back to look into it for me, too.

Sales guy came back and said they got everything on fine, tire shop I took it too was a bunch of dumb asses (despite lots of + online reviews).

Glad it's all figured out but wtf a hassle.

The good news is that all OEM Toyota parts are covered under a 12 month 12,000 mile warranty. Any Toyota dealer parts department should be able to honor this warranty with your receipt. Since your 4Runner is so new, the mileage documentation shouldn’t be an issue.

The bad news is, all of the labor cost to swap the tires and everything over to the new wheels is on you, unless the Toyota dealer did everything.

My guess on what happened . . .

Tire tech forgot to put the dust cap on and realized it after the wheel was mounted to the hub. Being lazy tried to install it without taking the wheel off.

You can see how this wheel has an opening near the end cap that is smaller than the diameter of the dust cap which would require the cap be installed BEFORE installed the wheel (as someone mentioned above).

They actually showed me how it wouldn't go on before even mounting the tire to the wheel.

I think you are right in that they didn't try to push the cap in the wheel first, but instead just left it on the hub.

Ah, I was mistaken. It wasn't the OP, but the quoted message below in the discussion of this topic in the "what have you done" thread.

But why would they remove the dust cap in the first place? It doesn't have to come off to change wheels.

Toyota did stop putting these wheels on the TRD Pro about a year ago and went back to the old style, but they never said why.

There is no stop-sale on these wheels though, I think the dealership mischaracterized that. You can still buy them from Toyota. There is no fitment issue with them, and the OEM lugs fit fine.

Yeah it was one big mess but happy it resolved itself. Now just waiting on the center caps to arrive which I checked are in stock at the dealership I ordered them through.

Beats me. I just offered a guess. I didn't assume rational behavior be the installer nor do I have all the facts.

Those aren't the same wheels that the OP currently has mounted. The design is very close, but they're not the same...

I had a similar situation with my '23 Pro, which came with the older SEMA style wheels. I ordered a set of the new TRD wheels (from a Toyota dealership) to mount my winter tires on back in December. Installer said the rears fit fine, but fronts wouldn't sit flush on the hub due to the dust cap. He quickly showed me it wobbling a bit, so I said to put the winter set in the back and put the other set back on. Took them home and mounted everything myself with no issues. It seemed to be simply an issue of not actually getting the new wheel centered onto the hub to push it on. If you try to mount it up and have it a little off-center, it'll catch on the dust cap lip and rock back and forth as if it won't seat. I just had to give it a little extra lift to get it over the dust cap lip and then it centered right up and sat flush on the hub. No issues whatsoever since then.
