Sounds similar to our engine with 137k miles.

    Sounds fine to me.

Most reciprocating noises to worry about will be evident when you first start the car, or when applying load

At the risk of getting flamed for starting a new "oil thread", there are reports from both Tacoma 4.0L V6 and 4Runner 4.0L V6 owners that the engine seems quieter after going to a heavier weight oil. It may work for you, and it may not.

Four years in a 3rd gen Tacoma and two months in a 5th gen 4Runner I’d be more afraid if these engines didn’t sound like they are going to blow up….

For months I was convinced my engine was broken and about to blow. That was about 80k miles ago, I just hit 160k, and still runs great getting 21 mpg.

Apparently sounding like it's about to shoot a valve spring through the hood is a Toyota thing.

Yeah, I went through the same thought process listening from the same location from the perspective of fifteen years prior with 2 4.7 L V8 Toyotas which were smooth as silk. The 4.0 V6 is a noisy motor.

If you want to hear mechincal clatter find any mid-70's BMW or Moto Guzzi motorcycle and listen to them while they are running and you'll think your V6 is an S-Class Mercedes.

Sounds like my ‘24. I think it’s even more profound while sitting in the driver’s seat. It’s almost like a diesel engine sound.

This is one of the first things I asked on here too when I brought home my Runner. Nobody prepared me for this noisy engine lol

I bought a used 2013 3 weeks ago and almost called the dealership and told them they sold me a 4runner with a bad motor. The first morning I started it to go to work it was idling at 1200rpm and sounded very strange. It didn't sound like that at the dealership but I'm guessing it's because they already had it warmed up for my test drive. I was so relived after jumping on youtube and investigating a bit.

The level of panic I went through the first morning I had my 2013 because of this scenario. It was 20 out and man I thought that thing was toast. Almost called the dealership but YouTube saved the embarrassment.

Modern engines are designed with short skirt pistons that will tend to "slap" the cylinder walls until they reach operating temperature and thus reduce the clearance. Even at operating temperature they may still make a bit of noise compared to older engine designs with longer skirt designs. At RPMs above idle the pistons will no longer rock in the bores. It is nothing to be concerned about.
