Gas gauge not working on my 1999 4Runner. Dealership says I need a combination meter

    I'd sooner believe the sender in the tank was bad. That's a known issue on many 4Runners at this point.

    I've never heard of a combination meter before.

    I agree with @negusm that your fuel sending unit is going bad.

    Does it work intermittently or not at all?

    I believe Toyota calls their dash gauge cluster a "combination meter".
