I traded in a 2024 Mazda XC 90 for a '23 SR5. Lost money, but gained a vehicle that I think will be much more reliable, useful in rugged situations, dog-friendly, and comfortable to drive. Loving it so far. I've had it in challenging snowy conditions, and even with stock tires, it did great. Looking forward to learning to do basic maintenance (with help from here, no doubt), and also to one day getting a second set of wheels and tires for snow and off-road. Cheers!

Congrats and welcome. I do have to say what’s in everyone’s minds. That’s quite a way to lose money and trade a car so quickly. What happened with the CX90? 23 SR5s aren’t that expensive. What kind of hit did you get?

Good question! I came from a 2017 Highlander, which we absolutely loved, but which was having undiagnosable issues. The XC-90 Plug-in Hybrid seemed like a viable next step, and I made the decision too quickly because we had a road trip coming. Cargo space too small, ride too harsh, five recalls in its young life... I traded it after 8700 miles for a '23 4Runner with 8700 miles. So hard to know the financial hit exactly, but I do know that I'm not angry every time I get in my car, and I feel good about it in various ways. Looking forward to working on it, looking forward to many years of use. Poor gas mileage and sub-par crash tests are my only downsides, but I can live with those over the lows of Mazda.

Right, but Highlander to Mazda CX-90 makes sense. However, I really hated that vehicle, and throw in the fact that we're recently empty nesters, so not bringing loads of kids here and there, the 4Runner ticks the boxes of great in snow, roomy for dogs and cargo, and renowned for reliability. Drove it for 45 minutes today in some good Sierra snow and no problems.
