Hello everyone, I’ve been a member for a very long time, but have never owned a 4Runner. We have always been a Toyota family, but this is our first 4Runner. We got our 16yo a 2001 Limited 4wd, 225k, paid $4,800. Paint and interior is in excellent shape for its age. It has a bit of rust from living its first 7-8 years in OH, but has been in TN since 2009. It seems to be all surface rust, I can’t find any holes. I plan to hit it with a wire wheel and then treat it with something… not sure what is best to go with?? Needs valve cover gasket and a few small things, I also plan to do the LBJs ASAP. Timing belt is 50k old. What are some other things that I should hit right away?

I would say all the fluids, to include the radiator.

Is it just me or does your rear control arm mount look like it’s already cracked/rusting?
That is the achilles heel of the 3rd gens.

I got a 2002 4nr for my son 2 years ago and it’s been a great vehicle but we’ve done our share of preventative maintenance. Good luck!

There is certainly some rust, and I’ve since discovered more, but have yet to find anything other than flakes and surface rust.

Good to hear as it’s hard to tell from a picture. I had a plate welded over that spot on the passenger side as preventative maintenance as I plan on keeping it for many years and live in the rust belt. If it snaps, you’re up a creek. Keep an eye on that spot.
I put por-15 on my frame initially & later had it fluid filmed.
    Enjoy & welcome!

You mind highlighting what spot you’re talking about specifically? I’ll give it a good look tomorrow.

Not tech savvy enough to circle it, but here is a pic of one that snapped.

That’s brutal. I’ll give it a good look again, but pretty sure that area is surface only.
