A part time 4wd vehicle with a shift lever. As a loaner. Hmmm.

If I was ever in the situation where I took in my minivan for service, and they gave me a manual shift 4runner as a loaner, you can bet I would try shift into 4wd and 4Lo and play with the locker. If I found it difficult to work, or if it made gear grinding noises, I would keep practicing how to shift it until I got it right. I would also end up thinking 4runners are crap because it grinds sooo bad when shifting into 4lo while driving, and that it turns horrible with the locker on. Then I would be happy to get my minivan back and thank the stars I didn't buy a 4runner for my midlife crisis.

The next guy that got it as a loaner would probably do the same thing. ;)

OP, I would pass. Not worth the risk on a loaner. Also, the salesmen are very good at manipulating people that change cars just for color, so you’d probably get financially hosed, and they would even make you feel great about it. I would only do a deal like this if money and time was no object (I’d have to be both filthy rich, and bored).

At first I thought I wanted lunar rock, but it was hard to find and usually priced above msrp. A local dealer had an ORP in Ice Cap with 1 mile on it, and readily discounted it to $46,300.00 - sold. White is a great color and will not got out of favor like Luna Rock may in 10 yrs from now. I really like the white/black contrast. Looks like a beast stock!

If color is the only factor here, consider getting a wrap with the lunar rock color. I bet it would be quite a bit less to wrap it than to trade it. If you want the manual shifter for 4WD and crawl control then I see the pro with trading it for the ORP.

I originally wanted the nautical blue color but the dealer gave me too good of a deal on the magnetic grey color. I’m glad I bought it as I still smile whenever I see it and drive it.

lol missed the part where he said it’s a loaner. Come on OP, this is easy… dealer loaner is just slightly better than a rental vehicle…

how attached are you to that color?

You're looking at the usual person getting a loaner acting just like you, an avid 4Runner user on a 4Runner user forum. I'd bet good money that 95% of people who take their vehicle in to a dealership for service and get a 4wd 4Runner as a loaner have no desire or idea how to put it in 4wd, much less 4Lo or mess with the locker. You, and a lot of people on here would, I just don't think the general public would or would want to. The percentage of 4Runner owners on this or any other 4Runner forums is pretty low.

You’re right…probably. All it takes is just one guy who has the perfect combo of enough interest and no knowledge to mess things up.

I think those people aren’t that rare though. I find out a fair bit about things by accidentally breaking them first. Not intentionally mind you, but you know how it goes… sometimes manuals are inconvenient

    I wish I was joking.

Well, I would have said “hard pass” like the rest of the crew up until about 8 months ago when I was diagnosed with cancer. Now my perspective has changed in every way. Life is so fragile, we live next to the vail of life and death every day without knowing it. How long are you going to keep a vehicle doesn’t mean anything to me anymore. How long I’ll be on this earth does. Live each day as if it was your last, live like you are dying. Go where you want to go, do what you want to do. Kiss your kids or grand children, play with your dog. This shit show we call life can end in the blink of an eye. Go get that Lunar Rock TRD ORP if that’s what YOU really want and tell the rest of the world to go fuck themselves.

FYI, I wasn’t pointing a finger at you at all. I’d probably do the same thing if I got a loaner 4R. I just figured we aren’t the usual loaner recipients, but what do I know…?

No worries, I didn't take it that way. :)

It could be that my penchant for breaking things is less common than I think. But I guess it helps me imagine what a curious driver might do to a loaner. I had a little internet based knowledge of how the transfer case worked when I test drove mine at the dealer before I bought it, but I still felt like I wasn’t sure what I was doing.

Just think of driving one for the first time and seeing that lever move around everytime you applied a little throttle. It beckons the driver to shift it! Who could resist!? :p

you would be rolling the dice, for what gains? It’s not like the loaner vehicle represents meaningful discounts.

I would just get your wrapped. Be a lot cheaper. I have seen other buyers posting on Facebook about trading is for a different color and when someone asked about the cost they don’t usually post it because it’s a bad idea.

This person doesn’t want serious financial advice. They want you to pad their predetermined opinion on color so they can live in continual debt. Grow up and live with the color you bought, get over it, pay off your car, and live a better life debt free.
Otherwise this is an absurd question that answers itself off the bat.

There's no denying from a fiscal responsibility standpoint, It would be a tremendously poor choice to trade for that. But on the flip side, there are also people/companies that make outstanding fiscal decisions and make a great deal on money when people make poor fiscal decisions.

It's a free Country and people are free to make good or bad decisions on how they spend their money. There's certainly no shortage of either.

When we went shopping, there were 3-4 used 4Runners in the area. the first one we saw as Nautical Blue. The others were all white (bread) or silver. Look at my Avatar and see the one we picked! A 2019 SR5Premium with 17K miles. Never looked back!

Was color a factor? YES=the determining factor? NO.

You could always wrap the 4Runner? Then you could get any color your heart desires. You could even get a non-Toyota color just for you

You'll be upside down on the trade in and will either need to add that amount to any down payment or roll it into the new financing. But do what you have to do! Life's too short.......

God. I can sympathize, because at the age of 44 and owning many vehicles over the years, I have done some absurd things like this before. Maybe twice. Its the reason that I currently have 2 1987 Chrysler New Yorkers in my garage, lol. I bought one for some ungodly reason, and found another I liked more.

OP: It's your money, and you have to sleep at night with the debt and decision you make. Are you able to afford such a purchase? You acknowledged you are going to get fleeced a little, so you are aware of how this works.

My wise 44 year old advice is dont do it. I've gotten myself into enough situations that I wish I hadn't and thats a terrible feeling. That is, unless you have the disposable money on hand and can throw good money after bad. Then thats on you.

If you really want LR and are willing to take the hit financially see if you can get a new one through a dealer allocation. A financial hit is a financial hit regardless. So you may as well get a brand new one if you already willing to lose some cash.

Colors are funny. I really thought I wanted a red one but the practical side of me said red will fade more in the sun, red will show more dirt/scratches etc. I also like silver and thought wow this will match when I tow my boat, shows less imperfections etc. So I got silver but many days wish I got red. Best advice follow your heart and gut.

This is a good suggestion, if the OP *really* wants another color wrapping might end up being cheaper? As others have pointed out it is not financially wise decision. However, OP is the one paying the bills/car note/writing check, so do what you want!

If it were me the color of the SR5 would bother me every time I looked at it long after thoughts of the extra $ were gone. I think that the ORP, especially with KDSS, is an upgrade that would have cost you more when you bought the SR5 anyway so maybe it's just a wash at the end of the day? If you can afford it I'd say life's too short not to get what you really want :)

How much more would an ORP have been than his SR5 when he bought it?

Gotta be happy at the end of the day.

I went from 2021 SR5 Premium to a 2022 Limited after 8 months based off of my usage.

Every scenario is different based on your needs, not much help, I know but I am very content with my decision based off of my other 4wd toys available that now get more usage.
This is mainly only during hunting season, wanted to add that...

Was easier to keep my Tundra available for a 4Wheeler than worry about a trailer to transport out to a property.

Depending in what state you’re in, you’ll be paying taxes all over again. Aka, California.

In Texas, you pay taxes only in the difference between the trade and the purchase.

But you will be losing at least $5k on your SR5, plus taxes, plus the added price of the ORP. You’re looking at at least $7-8k more unless the dealer does you good with the trade. Even then, you’re looking at $4k loss, which is, not terrible.

Do it, I know what it feels like to have something you don’t like and the ORP is the better trim. But, you better be sure you like that Lunar Rock in the long term. Or that’s an expensive wrong color.
