I can work on and replace nearly everything. Funny thing though, most things don't need replacing. Only the "consumables".

I got my 4Runner as a daily commuter to keep the semi trucks and tailgaters off my built Tacoma. Things I like about the 4Runner:

Steering wheel and horn button are the same as the Tacoma
Shifter gate is the same as the Tacoma
Shorter overall length is good for weaving through traffic
4-way blinker button is in easy reach for sudden stops on the highway - I press it twice a day on average
4WD logic and low range works the same way as the the Tacoma - good for deep snow

If only Crawl Control worked in 2WD...

I personally think the 4R is the cleanest looking SUV when it is built right even better than Jeeps which are a very close 2nd.

    So aesthetics lol

if only we got the manual transmission from the Taco in the 4R...I believe it would have been a better match for the torque curve of the 4.0L 1GR.

My 21 Venture: I love that I can fill it with coolers and day tents and head into the deepest sand on the beach by our house (on a large lake) and if I get stuck in the sand - Crawl Control gets me out. Haven't ever needed to be winched - not once. Lots of Wranglers-Rubicons and Crossover SUV have been stuck door-deep in that same beach area. I've had SO many people watch my Crawl Control do its thing and say "OMG how the heck does it do THAT!!!"

Wife's 22 Limited 4WD: Love that it's almost as luxurious and quiet as a Lexus GX and has all time 4WD with a center-diff locker and on the unpaved roads around our house I never have to worry about my wife getting home safely even in the worst mud. On the Interstate it drives live a well-mannered car, has excellent ventilated seats, JBL audio and is just a super-nice driver.

Both: Just super-solid everyday drivers that we can feel good about knowing we'll get home with no issues (we use both vehicles in our work) and with about 80,000 miles between the 2, not one single warranty claim.

Every now and then, you'll spend money on something and in a year or two look back and say "THAT" was a darn-good purchase. Our 2 Gen5's are THAT purchase (well... purchases...). :)

    • rear window rolls down! How cool is that.
    • looks. very few if any other vehicles on road has the look. Its a sharp looking vehicle.
    • after maket support means I can keep modding this to my hearts contents. Keeps things fresh.
    • Its not changed since 2008. Really simple vehicle, has everything I need.
    • sound at startup! I know lot of people don't like it -- but this is how a truck should sound like!!
    • high sitting/view, love how I feel I am sitting quite high from the road and it provides good visibility and no vehicle (unless you are driving a lifted semi or something) can blind me coming in from behind.
    • audio system. I love it! I know people around here update it but I love it as is.
    • The "thunk" it makes when I close the door. Feels chunky.
    • All auto mirrors!
    • My kid loves it -- wants me to take it out every time we are going out, over a tesla model Y performance!

Third 4Runner, first post here. I completely second everything already said. I also love that the seatbelt shoulder straps don't lock you in every time you come to a stop (unlike an Outback). And, it allows you to drive one or two MPH without screaming at you to put on the seatbelt (unlike an Outback). Oh, it
doesn't remind you to "check the back seat" every time you park (unlike, you know).

My 2023 does that! I kinda left the setting alone now, but yeah 4Runner reminds me to check rear seats.

It's awesome that there's such a vast aftermarket presence. I've had some cars that everything had to be custom because only 1 company made stuff for it.

I could live in it if I had to.

I once lived in a Ford F-150 regular cab. The down side was bathin' in those PA trout streams. My 4Runner is like a suite at the Four Seasons... and the cricks are warmer in TX...

It is a jack of all trades. I didn't find another jack in the market. Wrangler and Bronco are not jacks. Also, Bronco is a pile of crap.

When modified properly, can do 90% of what that Jeep can do, and it has a city block worth of cargo space, can't beat that.

    Made and assembled in Japan.

I'm all for Made in America, but we all know how that's turned out for vehicle quality.

Well-built is well-built. Made in Japan exemplifies this today. It's largely a cultural and personal pride approach that Japan has, that sort of got lost here. Made in USA vehicles deteriorated decades ago for a number of reasons. There are still many things made in the USA that are the best, though. But with the 4Runner, Toyota can hand you one of those and you'll drive it for 100k+ miles with no problems at all. That's automatic, with only a few exceptions. I jokingly 'complained' one time that a headlight only lasted 115k miles on my 2019.

Super roomy. Great visibility - I can see over traffic. A ton or cargo space. Simple and rugged design. Lots of aftermarket support. Oh and the keyless entry is something I've come to really appreciate.

Ha ha, I didn't mention keyless entry because I thought all new vehicles have it. I was so excited about apple car play and keyless entry and one touch lock (don't know what they call it). But I didn't want people rolling their eyes that every other vehicle has it.

Maybe it helps if you update your vehicles slowly. It makes you appreciate what others take for granted.

Yup, forgot about that one. Within the last several months, my daughter traded in her '22 Tacoma for a '23 4R TRD ORP in Lunar Rock, my wife traded in her '18 Ford Escape for a '23 RAV4 XLE in Lunar Rock, and I traded in my '22 Explorer ST for a '23 4R Limited in MGM. All of these vehicles are still made in Japan, so that was definitely a consideration when we got them, especially the 4Rs.

Well, the Rav4 and Tacoma may or may not be made in Japan, but the 4R is.
