I wanted to do this at 500 miles but ended up at 700 miles before I could get to it. At the recommendation of old school and modern mechanics I decided to do an oil change within the first 500-1000 miles to get out any debris and wear metals from assembly and break in so they aren’t possibly circulating for 5,000 miles before they are removed at the first “recommended oil change.” For those interested, here are some pictures of what I found in the filter canister and filter.

I'm an old school mechanic. Did my first oil change on my '22 at 900 km/6months. Was surprised at the amount of aluminum chunkies contained within the filter pleats. Actually in my case there were more than what your pics show. This is good practice I would recommend for any new engine. No regrets on changing it early. It's just a damn oil change. 2nd oil change showed almost no metal in the filter pleats. I use only oem filters and follow the severe service schedule. Every 6 months regardless of mileage. Volatile topic and I don't care what other people think about a simple oil change and they can flame me all they want if they don't agree. Do what you think is right and works for you. I would say your doing good.

Very interesting. Hope you were following the break in period instructions as well.
I never got to see what's inside, However I did my first oil change around 1000-1200 miles.

I did not post this to stir the pot but to provide real world data on my findings. I know many people wait to change the oil until the recommended 5k miles and also a lot of people take it to the dealer, rather than do it their self, and never get to see what was going on during that time. My family built engines and raced. I was always told back in the day to change the oil on a new vehicle at 500 miles and don’t worry what others say. It isn’t their vehicle or responsibility. Oil is cheap. $66.00 with filter from the Toyota dealer to be exact. I hope my OP is helpful to others that haven’t seen the filter and canister at the first oil change. Have a good evening.

You'll be ok, once you're on the forum for a while you too will feel the desire to poke fun at oil change, and tire size threads ;)

Engine break-in is 1000 miles according to the owner's manual, so you've done it too early :stirthepot:

The rear diff break-in is 500 miles and there's no filter :stirthepot:

No judgement here. I did my first oil change at 3k miles because I ran my new truck hard, fast, and desert hot. And like OP said, 66 bucks. Why not.

I see the metal. But would that metal actually do any harm if one didn’t change oil until 5 or 10k miles? Is there any possible way that metal could get past the filter?

Yes, the bypass valve in the filter cap opens when you get on the throttle before the oil reaches operating temp (and viscosity).

Is there a different engine sound when this happens? (Can you tell from the drivers seat when this happens?)

^Not distinguishable from the general valvetrain chatter when the engine is cold. Even when the oil reaches operating temps, the bypass valve can still open at high rpms. It's important to understand the oil filter system isn't designed to filter 100% of the oil going through it.

You will definitely hear it though, if the bypass valve is stuck closed and the engine develops rod knock from oil starvation. :cookiemonster:

Exactly why I did mine at 1,600 kms, then again at just over 5,000 kms, and around every 5K kms. If you change your own oil, it’s cheap insurance / peace of mind.

I got to my 18 highlander and 21 4runner at about 1000miles. The highlander looked just like that the pics you posted. The second oil change at around 5k showed very few sparklies.

My 4runner was almost perfectly clean on at the first change. Some luck of the draw I suppose, but worth the small expense to have a look.

Yup. I work from home, and any driving during the week are short trips in traffic. Only time I get to do some long drives is to go do some offroading. Plus bigger tires than stock and added body weight is excess load. Avg <900 kms a month, so I’m still only changing my oil every 5 months.

Thanks for posting. My 24 only has 375mi on it so I have a bit to go, but I will now be doing the first oil change around 500-750 miles.
