Hi guys, I have a 2023 Off Road runner. I am trying to put the vehicle into 4 wheel drive and it seems difficult. This has the shifter one and not the knob style. Is it suppose to be hard?

    Thanks

    Kevin

For high, you should be driving forward below the max shift speed of 50whatever on a straight path. Let off the throttle a little and pop it into 4wd. Don't limp wrist it.

Mine takes some effort to shift. Nothing like the manual shift t-case on my old Jeep.

4Hi is just a matter of tugging with authority.
4Lo requires stopping, putting transmission in neutral, then shifting the TC handle from 4Hi through neutral into 4Lo in one motion. I imagine you know all this, so I assume yours is so new, and just needs some exercising to get it to be easier.

Just pop that shifter into high after letting off the throttle a little on a straight path.

It took me a while to get used to how much force it takes to throw that lever.

Give it a little side to side jiggle as you’re pulling back into 4H. Not like an inch sideways or anything. More like you’re kinda wiggling it and pulling back at the same time. The last inch of travel back you should feel a clunk. That’s your bingo.

shifter will be softer with time but still require good tug.

In the bolded part on the 4wd shifter(NOT the main transmision shifter), DO NOT stop at neutral, or you will grind getting into or 4lo or back into 4H.

Ask me how I know LOL.

    Wut?

You do stop and go into neutral for 4L. Look on your visor.

    Read what i wrote.

The "shift into neutral" language is for the main transmission shifter, not the 4wd/transfer case selector.

He meant neutral at the trans.

He meant neutral at the case.

He said do not stop (your hand movement I imagine) in neutral on the transfer case lever. Not the transmission

    here is what he wrote:

There are two places with "neutral". I bolded the 2nd "Neutral" since that is most likely referring to the transfer case shifter and not the transmission shifter, which is already in neutral.

Yeah definitely don't stop but even then just pop it back in. It's a Toyota, a grind is nothing.

Mine took some force when I first did this right after buying it new. Now it doesn't take as much force to shift it into H4 and H2. Each month I exercise H4 for a few miles around my neighborhood just to keep it lubricated. This month I didn't have to exercise it as I got to drive it in the snow for a few days.

Odd hearing so many saying you have to shift it with authority. Mine since new has shifted into 4H like butter using only a thumb and two fingers.

Oh lord, this horse has been beaten to death. Here's the right way:

4H - in the window visor thingy says you can shift into 4H while moving. I just keep it in D, release the brake let the truck start moving then shift to 4H it should be smooth.

4L - when in 4H, go into neutral in the transmission, them shift to 4L and it should engage right away.

For rear locker, in 4L, put it in neutral and press the button, you might have to turn the wheel left and right and you'll feel like a clink and the light will turn solid.
