What are some annoying things about your 5th gen besides mpg?

They weren't Toyota balljoints, and they didn't fail because of the lift. The failure has been addressed by the manufacturer, design and material changes ensued.

You know I've joked that if I could afford another 4R one day, I'll keep it near bone stock on 265's. Because I mean from 2016-2021 my Toyota factory balljoints did not fail lol SPC from 2021 to 2023 already failed. But the products are in a way apples and oranges

- Rear view mirror is not wide enough (vertically) to cover the entire rear window in one glance. You have to either duck down to see the top (far) or stretch your neck up to see the bottom (near).

- Windshield warmer always turn on the AC compressor. There is no way to direct air towards the windshield without having the compressor on.

It seems to be some sort of weird "truck" thing. My Ford F250 has the same set up. If someone always drives with left arm on the door sill I guess it's convenient but otherwise it's not as ergonomic as the older set up.

 

I thought it was a little different at first, but ended up liking it because I’ve always used the doorsill as an armrest on most of the cars I’ve had. My elbow/arm has never actually settled well in the normal armrest areas. Up top, those switches are easy to see and use without fiddling.

 

4Runner is a truck, Exploder, yeah Exploder, is a minivan. Different vehicles.

 

I will never own another vehicle without one of these. You can see everything behind you, the entire width of the vehicle. They just clip onto the OEM mirror. It's life changing!

Exactly, and it’s adding insult to the injury that a car made for the city and commuting gets an elevation screen but the 4R that’s made to go on top of mountains doesn’t

 

Hyundai put that there in anticipation of knowing how high their pile of poop will get for excluding immobilizers.

 

They would be perfect if they dimmed.

 

I've told myself I would go through the OEM nitto before changing tire size so it would give me time to think about what I want. After 20k miles, I still dont know! When I first got the 4R, I was set on 285/70 then 255/80 which would be more useable for what I do even though it looks less cool. Now, I'm wondering if I want to stay stock size with just better rubber as I've never really struggled with 265/70 for where I've been and it performs better on pavement (mpg, transmission, etc...) for when I go on long trips to Utah or Colorado. Or 275/70 to go ever so slightly bigger but not worring about everything else that comes with having a big tire?

so many more questions and much less straightforward than 2 years ago when I bought it. I guess I've got a few more miles before I make a decision but the indecisiveness is real!

 

@semprenissart hah! I hear you dude, that's a tough choice especially the more you read. I remember when I bought new in 2016 I didn't know what KDSS was or that I had it. I didn't know what 265/70r17 meant.
What I did know was that right away I was going to tint all the windows within legal limits in Canada, and install new headlight bulbs and front & rear cameras.
I never did any of those things. Nothing at all until 2021. And then as I like to say a modification explosion happened. Followed by a 4runners. com addiction

If I were you I would do the pizza cutters or the 275 70s! In their own way they're both safe in general from rubbing

 

2022 SR5 Premium, it came with nav- and the built in nav is probably the worst I've ever experienced. Actually I take that back - it is the worst nav unit I've ever tried to use, period. Not only is it obtuse at best when it comes to editing destinations, but renaming, setting or removing favorites, sorting names, etc...all those functions were evidently designed by different committees and none of them work the same way. It's terrible. Then, there's the actual navigation...

I've never had a nav unit try to route me off of a major multi-lane highway onto side streets to get to a location off of an exit some 30 miles straight down the highway - I mean, I'm 30 miles away from the exit, about to get onto the highway, and it deliberately tries to tell me to not get on the highway and just stay on the 30mph, tons of stoplights, side street/frontage road instead of just getting on the 60mph highway. No, it was not set to ignore highways/freeways....and as far as I know it should be set to fastest time, or less mileage - the sidestreet/frontage road route was neither. That's just messed up. There's no reason for it to ever purposefully default to the worst route but it does it all the time; it'll consistently chose the longest, slowest route to anywhere.

I wound up putting in a windshield mounted Garmin GPS instead and I use that mostly. Sadly it's not perfect either; it likes overheating in the summer and will just turn itself off since it's right on the windshield and it gets pretty toasty.

Another annoyance is the onboard GPS doesn't have a speedometer in it. My Garmin does, which is how I know the car's speedometer is ~2mph off (fast) from the factory, with the factory stock wheels and tires.

It sucks, but I paid for this crappy thing, so I try to use it as much as I can...it's just so horrible that I'm seriously thinking of replacing the whole head unit with a Pioneer nav unit; something that I know works. I'm just loathe to spend another grand or two to replace something that should have come right from the factory.

 

No complaints with my 23 SR5Prem. Happy with everything thus far.

 

I have to agree with you regarding the factory navigation unit. But I'm surprised at your Garmin having overheating problems. I have a whole box full of various Garmin GPS units that I use on my dash and NONE of them has ever overheated. Use those same GPS units on my dirt bike and my quad where they are exposed to direct sunlight - which here in Nevada is very strong - with no problems. Here's what my dash looks like when I'm out in the back country:

 

Mine is suction-cup mounted right next to the driver's side A pillar just above the dash. It's also 5 years old at this point (DriveSmart 65 I think). Maybe it's not the heat, I dunno - but every now and again it won't power on on start, and it's not power related...if I press and hold the power button on the back for a while it eventually reboots. It's not the end of the world or anything, just an annoyance - it only seems to happen in summer, too.

 

I thought I was the only one!
