What should I expect to pay for a 2000-02 4wd 3rd gen?

I want a later 4wd 3rd gen with less than 200k miles and ideally in decent condition. I don’t necessarily have a budget, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to drop $20,000 on one. I’m also considering a later 1st gen Tacoma, but I feel Tacomas have even more of a premium currently.

I don’t want to deal with rust at all. I’m in the south east though, so hopefully I can find something.

$5-$12k. It's hard to pin a number down. Condition is everything.

 

I want one that’s decent - worn but taken care of. Obviously the nicer the better, but I don’t want to spend more than like $8,000 ideally.

 

I think a bigger constraint will be what you can find at what price around you. With car prices being high I feel that pickings have slimmed in the past couple years especially popular models.

I was looking at 4th gen models and third-gen Pathfinders before buying a 5th and options for either in my area didn’t fit my requirements or just didn’t exist and I didn’t want one enough to travel.

On a $10k budget I’d also look at a newer Xterra and other alternatives but YMMV. I know a multi-mode transfer case is a big plus.

 

Yeah, there isn’t a ton of selection unless I want to over pay. I’m debating just spending more on something newer - I found a later V8 4th gen with 68k miles for $14,500 near me. Also I found a decent deal on a 2013 TX Pro Tacoma for around $19,000. Makes spending $10,000 on a 200k 3rd gen 4Runner not worth it.

 

I like the v8 4th gen with 68,000 miles. Did you get a chance to see it in person? 14,500 doesn’t always mean 14,500.

 

New to the forum and Runner world. Have had several tacomas though. I just bought this 2001 Sr5 with 198,000 for $10k. I know thats high but i know the people it came from and the frame was solid. I also weighed the idea of getting a newer truck or a used truck but everything is still s high. I have always wanted this year runner too.

 

Even has the stock cassette deck, they had taste.

 

Local friend had it sold it to another local friend with 175,000 miles on it. The friend I bought it from had bought it three or 4 years ago for his son for when he turned 16. So they drove it periodically done routine maintenance. His son is finally 16 and has decided he needs a truck and I told him if he ever wanted to sell it I wanted it. I was going to trade him a 1993 ext. cab whenever I got the motor back but guess he couldn't want

Just paid 11,300 for a 2001 4wd sr5 in black. It has 195,000 miles but it is a single owner from Amarillo TX. After doing the timing belt and sorting a few things I think I paid about 15k in price plus immediate maintenance tax and tag and stuff
