You mean the G Wagon? Have you checked its angles and tires? The thing stock is not going anywhere, it needs major surgery.

I would love to have the opportunity to find out. I got here without a locker. I haven't been in a situation that ATRAC hasn't gotten me out of.

A Rubicon on 37s will give you a solid 50 and 45 degrees of approach and departure angles respectively, now that is called a serious off-road rig. 2 door even better. Even stock they are amazing

4Runner was never intended to be a Jeep rival. I remember in the 90s it was the Grand Cherokee that was its rival, they were throwing V6s and V8s at each other. It was the Land Cruiser that kind of had some beef with the Wrangler. Grand Cherokee and Land Cruiser quit the game, so 4Runner and Wrangler were not a threat to each other. And Ford makes such crappy vehicles that 4Runner is still not under threat, so don't expect anything great from Toyota in the next generation

I have only used my locker a few times, not because I got stuck with A-Trac, not at all. But because I just wanted to test things and see the difference. A-Trac is awesome, I would rate my A-Trac skills 6/10, need some more time.

I made a couple of videos a while back when I did an A-Trac versus MTS crawl control comparison. I did better with A-Trac.

They have different purposes, so they're not directly comparable.

You could probably find a bypass around that screenshot that a Honda civic could get through. But then again, I feel like we lost sensibility quite a while back in the thread.

Nothing like driving through the toughest part of trails that you can find, only to see a lowly Subaru or crossover pass you in the opposite direction at high speed while you think to yourself "WTF are they doing back here in that? I'd never bring that out here?!"

Not from personal experience, obviously. Heard from a friend :anonymous:

Meanwhile, back to the start. We bought the ORP (2020), did we need the 'premium' part, probably not. I have quite a bit of off-road time in older pickups, some would say old school. I have had pickups with lockers, 40" tires, Dana 60's, Ford 9", Detroit lockers, 400+ h.p. engines, multi leaf-springs, auto trans., manual trans. So when we bought a Taco OR. all this electronic stuff was like... BS! The truck was there, and so were we, we traded in a Chevy LTZ, which by the way got it's dainty bumper air deflector thingy ripped off on a concrete 6" parking block, anyway, I had an old Toy pickup, an '86, had great luck with it and thought we'd try another Toy, but still had all this electronic shit, locker, MTS, CRAWL, etc. Over the course of time came a situation where I need 4wd, wouldn't work, so decided to try the electronic stuff in the truck, CRAWL to be exact, out of the ditch I come. We bought our ORP 4Runner for 42K, the 'electronic' shit in the Taco got us a great trade in. Now we have some more electronic shit, does it work, I'm inclined to believe so, will I get to where I'm going without it? Probably. We do some off-road stuff, not hardcore by any means, are there ways to save money on purchases? Yep, but for the time we'll keep our OR 4Runner.. it works for us! Just a couple of thoughts.

Thing is, I didn't know what I was doing. Learned a lot about the capabilities of my SR5 on that trail. Learned a few things about myself that day, too. A descent spotter, some courage and the willingness to "bump" the obstacles were somewhat new concepts to me. Also the "as-much-gas-as-needed-but-as-little-as-possible" game was in play. My truck hated me for going here.

But I would do it again.

EDIT: This was my 1st time in Moab and my 6th time off-roading.

If you think a Honda Civic can make that trail, you need serious help. Until help arrives, take your meds and go back to sleep

He's claiming there's probably some bypass a Civic can take. Of course, then we get into the whole journey vs. destination debate, etc.

if you really believe that a stock pro (or even OR) cant follow an SR5 with KO2s and steel bumper you're out of your mind.

while A-trac is very capable, there are areas the rear locker will slowly crawl its way out while Atrac will struggle so if anything the off road trims will have the edge.
The biggest downside of the off road trim are the stock highway tires. Put the Pro tires on it and the two trims are equivalent and superior than an sr5 with KO2s. There's a much bigger difference between stock OR highway tires and Nitto terra than Nitto terra and KO2
Put KO2s (or similar) on an OR or Pro and you're golden

the new land cruiser and GX (I dont know about the LX) both have an electronic rear locker like the 4runner off road trims have...

Sure they can follow, but they will lose their bumpers. Locker and MTS don't improve angles

Maybe you should drive one of these offroad so you stop tearing up you bumpers.

Gives you the approach/departure angles and flex you're looking for

Anything that will tear off my rear bumper, is probably beyond my offroad skillset, so I will avoid the trail or take the bypass route.

yea just like any other 4R or any other vehicle that doesnt have steel bumper to scrape. And that's only if you're going on very big obstacles. Good tire placement will get you in most places unless you're looking to do some hardcore rock crawling which a sr5 on stock size KO2s will not do great either

Like I've said this countless times here, the problem of this truck is not it's traction and 4x4 systems, not at all, this thing is an absolute beast. The problem are it's angles that I'm trying to improve.
