I’m in a tight spot right now. I recently bought a nice clean red limited second gen with no rust and 146,000 from the og owner. I’m doing the head gasket job and after that it will be a nice clean good vehicle. However I’m thinking of selling it for a couple thousand after the gasket and a few other little things. It should sell for quite a bit I hope (maybe not since it’s a second gen). But basically I’m broke and don’t have money to build it out. I’m just wondering how much building a third gen 4Runner or pickup would cost to build out. Just a rough estimate. I’m thinking if I can sell the second gen for a couple thousand I can get another cheap old Toyota and build it out with the second gen money. But I have no idea how much that would cost. So preferably people with third or second gens answer because I’m not going to be buying a brand new fifth gen. Thanks in advance and reply’s are much appreciated.

I think a big question is what you intend to tackle and/or what look you’re going for.

You’ll probably get answers ranging from “$0, kept it stock, I sent it to Moab in the bald Hankook all-seasons it came with” to “I got the lift, upgraded tires, rooftop tent, tint, lights on all sides, locker front, rear, regeared AND angry headlights”

That said, if the 2nd gen is in good shape after the job and being broke, probably would be best to keep what you know and already paid for. I’m not sure why it would be cheaper to sell and buy + mod a 3rd gen especially since I see 3rd gen’s fetching a premium before you get to modding.

And there’s also the worry of being able to support a project right now but this isn’t 4savers.com if you’re not interested in that part of it

I'm in for about $3k, almost half of which was tires. The rest was tools, roof rack, sleeping platform materials, conveniences. The next thing I would add is rock sliders.

Ya I get what your saying but I don’t have literally anything to spare now but if I sell the second gen I’ll have something to work with.

This cost is one of my deepest secrets. Too much and quite embarrassing if you ask me. The benchmark is that I could have bought a landcruiser all super loaded and be done. Oh well, live and learn.

    Oooh look, another mod.....
I lost my spread sheet, so I have to start a new one. But my last one had a total of $4k (total - parts, taxes, shipping and labor/install charges)

It also included the money I made from reselling the OEM parts I pulled off my truck.

But then - assuming I read that right - you’ll have some cash but no truck to mod! If you're on the edge like that and do sell, I'd hang onto it just in case lightning strikes your daily or something like that.

I’m at $12k right now and could easily drop another $12k+ looking at my spreadsheet and that’s with me doing 100% of the labor.

I should password protect my spreadsheet.

    https://www.4runners.com/threads/5th-gen-build-a-baja-resilient-daily-driver.36058/

I’m current working on rewiring everything, getting my VHF radios dialed in, getting some camp lights on the rack, stereo improvements, and organizing/cleaning the interior.

    On the list is:
    $2,500 in lights
    $1,500 in stereo
    $4,000 regear + lockers
$4,000 in front and rear suspension upgrades
    $1,000 DIY bumper

++ misc: roam cases, Garmin Tread,

I refuse to figure out the answer to this. I don’t need that type of negativity in my life.
