Falken Wildpeak AT4W

Was going to comment about very few sizes of the AT4W seem to be made in china, but then I didn't look at the sizes you're looking at for your LandCruiser.

Toyo AT3 then Falken AT3W top two. KO were trash in wet and snow, KO2 also trash in wet and snow so I'm gonna guess that KO3 will follow suit.

 

The g015 is probably not aggressive enough for my use. In winter I do have dedicated snows(hakkapelitta LT3 studded) but do run into the occasional snow/hail storm outside the winter and rain often, so was mostly concerned about rain in this case while being able to go offroad. AT3w or now AT4w or baja boss is probably my best bet with current offerings. As you mentioned I don;t know what falken could improve especially for that added weight.

 

Chill, are they made in China? What’s the plant code on those AT4’s?

Falken was out at an event I just attended. Here’s the AT4W. Not the most revealing pic but you can see the tread. Rep said biggest difference from the AT3W is a beefier sidewall. I wanted Wildpeaks, but the Toyo AT3 was on sale at Discount Tire so I bought those on 12/30. Then of course the Wildpeaks go on sale January 1. Oh well. Very happy with the Toyos.

 

AT4 HD makes me think HEAVY. For those that need the tougher sidewall it may be a good thing.

 

I just ordered a set of these after seeing them on the America's Tire website while shopping for new tires. Looking forward to them after having AT3Ws on a couple other vehicles.

Be careful making any big assumptions about that Three Peak Mountain Snowflake. It’s mainly marketing as it only requires a tire to be 10% better than an average all season tire in acceleration on medium packed snow. That’s it, nothing more. They are better than most non-3PMS rated tires, but it’s marginal and not anything close to performing like an actual winter tire.

i just drove through a lot of slush and ice and black ice and snow about 90 minutes round trip on the OEM (Dueler H/T?) tires in 4 wheel drive High b/c it was snowing and it's 27 degrees. ANY way - i right away shifted first priority purchase from sound proofing the cabin - did not seem loud at all today or clay bar/ceramic treatment to Falken Wildpeaks. so thx for this heads up!!

i also wanted to ask how much the turning radius should be compromise in H4? i could barely do a u-turn. wondered whether that's normal for these 4Runners. being as my Jeep Grands were full time 4x4, i never experienced that before though kind of recall that from an old Jeep we had when it into popping 4x4 mode.

Different tires should not affect the turning radius much(if at all) unless going to a massively bigger size. You should not be doing a U-turn in 4wd in these. It is not AWD so the transfer case is completely locked when in 4H/4L. That is how you do damage to the transfer case and front axles. You can get away with it in very deep snow or very slipper mud but thats about it.

I just did an offroad event up at Windrock Park in Tennessee. I would’ve been happy with the Wildpeaks, but the Toyo AT3 is an excellent tire and I’m fine riding with them.

 

Well that's disappointing.

I haven't heard anyone complain about towing performance, comfort, offroad capability, durability, or sidewall issues with the Wildpeaks. All of those things seem to be great as far as I can tell.

But I have heard a bunch of people complain about the weight........and they go and make them heavier??

Doesn't sound like they're listening to their customers.

 

I have tons of them in my warehouse and I can tell you the sidewalls on these things are by far tougher than the previous version. For those worried about weight probably not a good option but it is a nice tire.

 

My preference is for dedicated winter tires for the winter, and any of the excellent options being discussed here for the other 3 seasons. If you don’t deal with snow and ice, then a dedicated winter is probably overkill. If you do drive in snow and ice then the grip of an actual winter tire is, in my opinion drastically better than any Three Peak Mountain Snowflake tire on the market. I like the K02 for an AT, but there’s no wrong answer with any of the popular choices. I’d say figure out your personal top priorities and select the one that is most focused on those areas.

 

I agree with this 100% as I work in the tire industry myself.

 

Here's a great video by an expert at a test track. One of the key take aways is that some All Terrain tires actually do perform exceedingly well and in fact, better than some dedicated winter tires. This is at an auto manufacturers test track in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan BTW.

I would have liked to see him include the Falken Wildpeak AT3W which I suspect would have performed very well. In my many years of experience living my whole life in Northern Michigan, the AT3W is excellent in winter driving conditions.

Are the sidewall improvements on the E-loads only, or did they strengthen the SL versions as well?

So according to TireRack for our standard 265/70/17 size, the SL AT4W are 48 lbs vs the AT3W 45 lbs

The E are AT4W are 54 lbs vs the AT3W 51 lbs

Both SL and E rated are 3 lbs heavier each tire now... but why?! Did sidewalls get punctured so frequently that Falken decided to make them heftier and heavier??? The whole goal should've been to make them lighter... like the song "light, faster, better, stronger" not heavier! 3 lbs isn't the end of the world but still.

I was about to pull the trigger on AT3W SL... and seems like a lot of websites have them out of stock now, guess will have to do AT4W SL

I hear ya. Down here in So Cal we don't get much snow but I do visit the Eastern Sierras frequently and so need something that’s going to work down south as well as something that does fairly well in the snow. Dedicated snow tire is way overkill so it’s gotta be a one do it all tire. The Falken AT3w’s and now the AT4w’s are the front runners for now especially since they come in a 255/80 17.

 

Not seeing it either. Been waiting for a sale to get tires.

 

I watched the video again (I’ve seen it before) and I think you might need to rewatch it as the winter tire outperformed all the rest by a wide margin. Most of the tires were All Terrains (all but 2 with the 3 Peak Mountain Snowflake), with the Michelin Defender LTX as the non-AT non-3PMS rated all season baseline, and the Michelin X-Ice as the winter tire. He also says that some brands, ie Continental don’t use the 3PMS unless their tire has a much wider margin than the 10% better requirement. It was the regular all season from Michelin that outperformed many 3PMS rate AT tires, and the wide margin between different 3PMS rated AT tires that was the takeaway. The winter tire easily outperformed all the rest, many by a very large margin.

 

Based on my 40+ years driving in Northern Mi on many different tires including dedicated winter tires, I'm exceedingly impressed with the Falken AT3W's. Drive what you prefer and good luck!

 

Me too but it seems like when they actually do a numbers test with quantitative data they try and not stack the Toyos with the Falkens for some weird reason. At least not recently. Hopefully with the new Falkens and Goodyears and others coming out TireRack will run a test on their track.

 

Got the A/T4Ws mounted today. Went with 275/70R17 which has a fair bit of rubbing with my stock suspension.

 

They look great!! Please let us know how they perform and if you notice any difference from the AT3W's.

Are you rubbing only at full left turn in reverse or other times too?
