Locked the rear for the first time

It made it easy and less fun. You think A-Trac would have done it? I didn't even try and went straight to the locker. Coming down was a lil scary lol.

Right wheel went up in the air briefly. But really it was the loose dirt that I decided heck let's lock it.

 

Doesn’t matter if you needed it. Important thing is you got a chance to practice with it.

that’s what I think the runner is for, not high speed highway.

 

Crawl control is great for that downhill if you can stand the noise.

 

Not sure about the mpg. 8-12 I guess

 

Nice tracking there! Try Crawl Control on the descent sometime - that's fun too.

 

Be nice if we had a lower crawl ratio to make that unnecessary.

Even in low range, 4Runner gearing is relatively high.

 

I've messed with ATRAC and it's pretty impressive for what it is. You probably would have made it fine with ATRAC, but it would have been a little bit more dramatic. To me having a locker is preferable, and smoother and more elegant.

 

4H without ATRAC or locker would've still made it.

These vehicles are very capable.

 

I would have killed myself if I used this truck's 4Lo/1st gear combo lol. Too fast

 

Going fast on that would be rough on the truck. I baby my boy, it is my highway cruiser lol

 

It seems like anytime I want the extra help, it’s when I’m going very slow on rocks. So I usually use the a-trac raw, without the crawl control aspect. Raw atrac seems to clamp down the quickest on a spinning wheel.

I don’t mind the noise since it’s not an every day thing. But I agree it’s goofy-loud. And I can attest that it is, in fact, much louder than dropping a transfer case

 

Craw Control would have handled the uphill part too like a Pro, but are you guys sure that much noise is really normal and not rough on the components?

 

Totally agree. Especially since the bigger tires create a lot extra leverage on the driveshafts. Gotta protect them from bouncing.

Not to mention, going only as fast as you need to keeps you from losing control and rolling. Something tells me that hill was way steeper than it looks in the video!

 

Yeah like always the camera is not being truthful. It was steep. At first sight I said yes time for the locker.

 

You know you can still use the brake pedal with crawl control, right?

Yes, no issue at all. Noise just comes from the computer using ABS and what not to control wheel spin.

 

What is the purpose of wheeling instead of walking/hiking?

That's what I was wondering.

 

Some would rather exercise the 4wd components in an actual off road environment once in a while rather than in a straight line down main street. There's an area near me that I use for the same purpose. It's also a great way to learn the components and capability.

If all anyone wants to do is drive down the street, there are 2wd 4Runners available.

 

I’d recommend getting a little 50 dollar weber, some lump charcoal, and make a hot-ass fire. Throw a nice thick rib eye, with just salt and pepper on there for a couple of minutes per side, maybe less. Just aim for the color you like. Then shut down the air vents and close it up in there for a few more minutes. There is no way frying up a steak on an indoor grill can match that! You can maybe get close, but then all your fire alarms will be going off from the grease smoke. Anyway, if you screw it up, keep trying until you have heroic success!

Also, when I go for walks, sometimes it’s fun to walk on the grass. Or even in the woods. Anything to break up the monotony.
Heck, even when things aren’t monotonous it’s funner than walking on a sidewalk.

It’s not everybody’s thing, though.

 

I used Crawl Control here and it was so annoyingly noisy. Did a great job though. This was very steep, camera is usual lying. If you rely on 4Lo/1st here you can end up in a dangerous situation.

nicely done, I guess it was much scarier from behind the wheel then it looks on camera.

 

It was when one of front my wheels lost traction coming down lol.
