Toyota Stalking, er...um, SPOTTING with Charlie™ (Hilux/Truck, and T-100 Edition)!

1984 "Stubby McFly" Pickup; I got a few pics of this rig at prior Carlisle shows, but this is the first time that I have been able to get this up close and personal with it!

I have no idea why this truck became "Stubby McFly" but I'm guessing that it got damaged, someone tried to create a highly maneuverable trail rig, or a combination of the two; 1984 holds the distinction of being the last year that electronic fuel injection wasn't available on these trucks, though I do believe that a carbureted 4-banger may have been standard on no-frills Toyota pickups into the early 1990s; 1985 Toyota 4x4 pickups are particularly sought after because 1985 was the last year for solid axles, and thus the only year you could get EFI and legit solid axles, so 1984 would also have solid axles! What is really weird about this truck is that there are clearly "EFI" emblems on either side of the cab; I am think that the frame and a few body panels are titled as a 1984, but that the cab had to be swapped due to rust or something, and it probably came from a 1985-1988 truck...

Stubby McFly is a very basic truck, with no A/C and almost no other options; I have only seen one Toyota pickup of this generation with power windows and locks, and that ironically was a 1985 "Marty McFly" tribute at a car show in New Jersey back in 2022, but a decent number of them do have A/C at a bare minimum.

I saw this sitting at a repair shop, and it would appear that it has not been driven in years, but overall it seems to be in pretty solid condition; I would guess based on the lack of inspection stickers (and the residue on the windshield), plus the more obvious lack of rust and rot, and that is camper is a transplant from outside Pennsylvania. It has a Chrysler wire wheel covers that appear to have come from a K-car, but the worst part is that it has an automatic

I scrapped our old water heater today, and guess what showed up while I was dumping it?!?!

This a 1987 XtraCab, and I believe it was a long bed in a prior life; I have no idea what trim level it is, but it has an automatic transmission and A/C (not working according to the owner) so that's pretty loaded for a late 1980s Toyota truck in my opinion! The truck has a clean title, but apparently was involved in an accident under prior ownership that destroyed the bed; I forget whether the owner told me that he built the bed or if the previous owner put it on.

The truck has less than 100K miles, but apparently the previous owner neglected basic maintenance and the engine in there now is a remanufactured one. Isn't killing a 22RE a fairly difficult thing to do?!?!

The FOR SALE sign says 1985, but Carfax says 1984, so this could be one of the very last carbureted trucks! The camper portion is almost completely gutted, and it's unfortunately an automatic...



However, it does have cab/dash A/C and does not seem to have major rust; I would buy this in a heartbeat and fix it up if I had the cash!

This photographic proof of how unkind Pennsylvania winters are to Toyota trucks; I saw 1992 Toyota 4x4 sitting by the side of the road with a For Sale sign shoved into the ground in front of it, so I stopped to take a look. The doors were unlocked (and amazingly enough, the key was in the ignition; that iconic Toyota door buzzer sounded when I opened the door, so that means the truck at least has electrical power, and despite its atrocious condition it probably fires right up)Unfortunately, this truck has the 3.slow as evidenced by the "V6" emblem on the grille...

Unfortunately, this truck has the 3.slow as evidenced by the "V6" emblem on the grille, but it has a low (for a 1992 Toyota) 132K miles! If this truck weren't rusted out and completely trashed, but still had this mileage, it would be suitable for a 3.4L swap!

 

For a 1992 regular cab, this truck is quite well equipped; A/C, tilt, intermittent wipers, and a cassette player!

 

Unfortunately, every body panel is rotted, and the frame is shot too. If the cab isn't salvageable, the drivetrain is likely the only usable thing, and this truck is probably ready for the junkyard once those components have been yanked; I wouldn't be surprised if this truck is mechanically fully functional though, including the A/C! You can see major rot on the frame in this picture...

 

The left bed panel was by far the worst in terms of rot...

 

If this truck were to undergo a full restoration, the driver's door would most certainly have to be replaced...

 

Look closely and you will notice that this truck lacks inspection stickers and a license plate; New Jersey stopped doing safety inspections in like 2010, and doesn't require emissions testing for vehicles older than 1996, so it's entirely possible that this truck was recently brought over from Jersey (where the winters are just as harsh as PA, if not harsher in some areas). It is also likely that this truck has been in PA it's whole life, was relegated to farm truck/off-road use when it failed a safety inspection, and hasn't been on a public road in years. This thing could probably pass a smog test in California with flying colors if the emissions control system is intact, but ain't no way in hell it pass a PA safety inspection in this condition!

I had a cyst removed last week and am at the dermatologist to finally (HOPEFULLY!) get the damn stitches removed. I pulled I to the parking lot and immediately saw this beauty parked there! The owner happened to be in the waiting room and was happy to answer all of my questions about the truck, which is a fully loaded 1990 model that spent the first 12 years of its life in Tennessee. He bought it from the original owner in 2002 and has been modifying it ever since.
The engine was overhauled by the original owner prior to him buying it, which included new head gaskets. The original engine made it to 300K miles before he finally replaced it with a rebuilt (and bored out) 3.0L from a custom shop in California. The truck is a 5-speed stick, but I forgot to ask if the transmission is original.

As shown by the vanity license plate, the truck has straight axles, and it has 4.88 gears to get those big wheels moving.

The truck has A/C, cruise, tilt, power windows, and power locks. The owner told me that everything except the power antenna works. The truck has a CD player and new speakers, but nothing too crazy, according to the owner.
