Why a 4Runner over the other options?

We had such good fortune with our old 4R, it was the #1 choice. We had an Armada awhile back and I loved the engine but the rest of it was just so-so. GX460 was a player until the wife saw the front end.

Seriously! I really hope corporate Toyota realizes how awesome that is and keeps in on the 6th gen. I'm a little nervous about it, though.

I don't agree with the reliability part. JL Wrangler is very reliable. I chose 4Runner because it is comfortable as a daily driver and has lots of room for camping.
You cannot go wrong with a new Wrangler with the 3.6L Pentastar V6 and the 8 spd ZF transmission. Jeeps break when they modify them, just like my Yota broke when I modified it.
Toyota is great, don't get me wrong, but I am no fanboy. I don't find it cool when people bash Jeeps. Jeep Wrangler is a solid vehicle, don't modify them and they will run forever. If true wheeling was my thing, I would be in a Jeep. 4Runner is a good compromise, that's why I bought it.

 

The 3.6 in the Wrangler is as good, if not better, as the 3.5 in the Tacoma. It is a workhorse that have been produced by millions and power a variety of FCA vehicles. It is a solid motor that can run for hundreds of thousands of miles.

 

I loved my Jeep LJ 2005. But, so many problems from about 50K miles on. Radiator, starter, rear main seal, front drive shaft pinion gear, 1st gear synchros (would pop out of gear under initial load).
Looked at 2019 Wranglers when the 2005 got totaled. Previous quality and then current high price to value ratio pushed me to the 4Runner. Much better for our dogs, passengers, etc.

 

The way I have been operating my modified 4Runner, I won't be suprised if I kill my transmission way before 200k miles. 34s on a 4Runner are like 37s on a Wrangler. You will not find a Wrangler on 37s that is not problematic.

 

If you are content with this much, and you like a smooth, solid and practical truck, then you need a 4Runner. Also, you need to know that 4Runner's suspension could and will break when you modify it, 4Runner can't defy physics.



If you want to go over much bigger rocks and don't mind some noise in the cabin, then you need the King on the rocks, the Wrangler. Wrangler has two solid axles, which means it is super robust.
Dana 44s rocking 37s with no problems.
No comment on the Bronco, it neither has Jeep's coolness and capability, nor 4Runner's build quality. I would pass the Bronco. And yes, I am biased towards Jeeps and Rams.

 

I had a Tacoma prior to my 4Runner and value things like reliability, minimal depreciation, and a simple vehicle/driving experience. I also have a kid and 2 dogs so a decent back seat/trunk were very valuable to me. The Bronco and Wrangler fit into the unreliable, complex, and bad trunk space categories so really, they weren't even on the consideration list. Also, the modern Jeep community is kinda the worst.

I'd more likely go to an entirely different platform (i.e. station wagon or something random) than get a Jeep or Bronco.

 

I got 3 pictures for you, look at them closely and decide which one you want lol. Connected Bronco on 35s, KDSS disconnected me on 34s, and disconnected Wrangler on 37s.

 

Just to preface, I wasn't considering a Bronco or Wrangler. I was considering 4Runner, Tundra or Tacoma. My reasons for Toyota were longevity, reliability and resale value.

We currently own 4 Toyotas: a 2015, 2018, 2019 and 2021. Their Kelly Blue Book value compared to the price we originally paid new:
2015 - 53%
2018 - 91%
2019 - 87%
2021 - 83%

Ford and Jeep aren't going to touch that.

 

Just so you know, Jeep Wrangler tops the list of the least depreciating vehicles, beating even a stud like Tacoma. Good luck finding a cheap Jeep

 

I know Kelly Blue Book isn't perfect by any means, but pricing a 2018 Wrangler with the same mileage and options as our 2018 Tacoma comes back with around 70% resale compared to 91% on our Tacoma.

I think this is subjective. A cheap used jeep may also be because a used stealership holds onto it trying to drive the price up. I have seen first hand some used dealerships with the same jeeps that don't seem to sell. They look in great shape but if a buyer can't get the price down they won't sell. Used car market right now stinks and I feel sorry for those who can't buy new. I owned a minivan with the same chrysler pentistar engine of the jeep and it was crap. This may be me personally but I believe the top two brands in the world are VW and Toyota and find it hard to find something I would want from most other brands. The big TWO seem to fill the gap in most categories. A jeep may be slightly better off roading than a toyota but I'd probably not own one. Too many on the road compared to the 4 runners where I live in Illinois. I wanted something "different".

Nice looking jeep with urban camo however it looks like a millennial's car. Mall crawling privileged kid. Give me a mans jeep with some mans colors. Women know when you have to use that much effort to draw attention you are trying to make up for something. Someone puts camo on a vehicle because they think camo / military yeah thats cool make me look tough. WRONG makes you look stupid. Especially if your non mil.

In the Broncos defense (not that I am a fan of Ford, at all, I hate my Ford work vans. I guess there's a couple Broncos I've seen that pretty rad but), does the size of tire, 35-in, make a difference to how far that axle can flex because the tire is bottoming out in the wheel well quicker than a 33 inch would?

 

Hey you know what there's a lot of Jeeps that are killer, and you can slap larger tires on those suckers easier.
The Jeeps and their community lose me with the stupid ducks and dildos also classic Jeep Wrangler drivers who slap ko2's (or KOPoo's as I've coined them) on their Jeep and act like it's an Overland truck now

 

You are completely correct thank you. I did not notice that hood from his first three pictures. He was also right in the mounting point for the Jack is a little odd. Never plans to put the front window down I guess. Still not my cup of tea for the styling. I like to see it from afar.

 

Well, that two-door Bronco had 35s, so I didn't see any Flex in there. My stock KDSS did better with 32s. Yeah I have a longer wheelbase, but still.

With the sway bar disconnect on the Sasquatch package, it could do better probably than the kdss, but it's not going to be nowhere near the Wrangler.

No but minus the swaybar disconnect, your 4runner is on 32s and the Bronco is on 35s does that change how much flex the Bronco will get right off the bat from tire size hitting the fender liner and maxing out before true max

 

So how come I still beat it when I am on 34s?

 

I've had a Jeep (WORSE 4WD I've ever had-Real POS!!) and a '92 Bronco (#2 POS)!! 'Nuff said??
