    I have read that using gears 1 and 2 occasionally helps to lubricate the rear of the transmission bearings which otherwise do not have the rear portions lubricated in the D position. Have you any experience of this?

    I'm not understanding how this even makes sense.

    You go through 1 & 2 regardless. Or are you saying by keeping it in those gears longer it supposedly lubricates it more? Not making sense to me.

    The only thing I can think is that it might actuate the shifter linkage completely to the end of its range and might get any lubricant there to cover the joints a little more? Makes no sense.

    I'd have to see an article describing exactly why.

    The article I read was in Consumer Reports a few years ago. I cannot find it now. The logic was as follows: In a reciprocating compressor, it is important to keep piston-rod load reversal in mind. Otherwise, the crosshead pin bushing will always be pressed for 180 degrees, thus starving the remaining back 180 degrees from getting proper lubrication. This in turn can cause metal-to-metal contact between the crosshead pin and bushing. Similarly, between the big end pin and the big end bushing. Adequate piston rod load reversal is considered an important factor in reciprocating compressor design. A reciprocating gasoline engine design in several ways is similar to a reciprocating compressor.
    Forgive if I have created more confusion.

    Yeah never heard of common 4R transmission issues so I'd say stick to D unless needed.

    I was under the impress OP thought the oiling benefit was in the trans not the engine. Unless I'm reading it wrong.

    Maybe he did but, and I think that's what he thought but a transmission is not a reciprocating assembly, only the engine is.

    Basically, the take-home lesson here is that reciprocating internal combustion engines are not affected by load reversals because, unlike reciprocating compressors, they’re equipped with a reciprocation dingle arm to reduce sinusoidal depleneration. People always forget about that little fact!
