Just bought a 2021 and one of the main things I wanted was carplay. We'll apparently my USB-C port doesn't work. I called Toyota they said I had to go to dealer to get it fixed. Seems weird. Could it be a fuse burned out and maybe that's why it doesn't work? I bought a brand new apple lightening to C cable last night. Nada. Doesn't even charge my phone! I am so pissed. I want to get rid of this car. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks

The USB port up front goes directly to the headunit and is more of a media port than a charge port that's why the dealer wants to see it. There is no separate fuse for it.

Just to clarify a small thing. 2021 4Runner does not have USB C from factory. It has old USB-A. Maybe previous owner messed up something?

I didn't know 2021 had USB-C. Mine doesn't. Might have been an aftermarket modification? If you just bought it, yes take it to the dealer.

Welcome. The USB media port is right below your HVAC controls and is a USB A port from the factory. Someone may have changed it to a USB C port along the way and didn't wire it properly or used a cheap USB cable that doesn't transfer data. Do you have a picture of where you're plugging your phone in?

    Yep, we're interested in a photo, my 2021 doesn't have a USB-C port anywhere.

My 21 Venture doesn't have a USB-C port and neither does my wife's 22 Limited 4WD. The Limited has every gizmo available on a 4Runner. So, if our 22 Limited doesn't have a USB-C from the factory your 21 definitely won't. You've clearly got your hands on an aftermarket add-on and who knows how or if it works. It's not a bad thing and a simple adaptor addresses this. Hopefully you're not serious about selling your new 4Runner over a USB connection. If so, maybe ownership of that 4Runners is not meant to be in the first place... no offense intended.

My 23 ORP has a USB A as well. That sucks if someone boggered it up trying to make it a USB C.

Showing my age, I don’t even know what is “A” and what is “B”?

Man I miss the old days. :(

My 2023 has USB "A" under the HVAC for carplay, however Toyota did update the rear plugs to USB C in the back for the two rear passengers.

I'm going to agree that the previous owner likely converted the USB A for carplay into a USB C jack. Waiting on pics as well.

Da hell ? If CarPlay is such a big deal, why didn’t you test this before buying?

I'll be honest, I have purchased 3 cars with Carplay and AA, and I have never tested them first either. If the car spec'd with it, I've pretty much always assumed it would work just like the OP did.

If there is factory warranty then I don’t need to test every feature.

OP’s franticness implies lack of warranty, in which case it’s sold as is

My gut feeling is this is not going to be that big of a fix once we figure out what's going on.

If it’s indeed not factory as it sounds, don’t take it to the dealer OP, they’ll perform a wallet-ectomy - maybe a car audio shop or someone with wiring know-how.

I have a 21 ORP factory has USB A (the bigger one); carplay works great.

Just went with a friend to pick up a new 2024 Rav4 yesterday and it has wireless carplay. Base ass model too. Am I wrong in my understanding that to use apple carplay in our 4R's, the only way we can in is to physically plug the phone in to the USB right under the radio??
(Sorry OP but it is kinda related to your post!)

Yes to my knowledge the only way I am aware of to use car play in the 4r is as you stated to use the usb right under the radio

Would really like the hear back from MaraMara (the OP) and hear what she figured out - if anything - or what the resolution to this was... Did she return the 21 she just bought? Did she try and a USB-C to USB-A adaptor and is now plugged-into CarPlay?

MaraMara, if you don't mind updating us, we'd appreciate it.

    Thanks!

OMFG. I am so sorry. It’s not C. It’s just like y’all’s. USB. And I bought a usb to lightning sync
I feel pretty stupid now that everyone has answered.
    I apologize
So I finally figured it out
The USB is f’ed up. I have to hold it straight up and now I put a piece of electrical tape to hold it in place so the CarPlay will work
    No there’s no warranty
It’s the actual port that’s wonky
So new question ( with my tail between my legs)
Where besides the dealership would one take this thing to get ur fixed?

Purchase part number 86190-35020 and install yourself. Pretty easy to pull apart dash. You need a 10mm socket and that’s it.
