I am interested in getting a dash cam and I need to figure out what how many pins are in the dongle/cable. I cannot figure out how to remove the maplight housing to gain access to said dongle. I have an '18 SR5 with the sunglass holder. I found the 2 screws in the holder itself. It's the aft connector I am having issues with. The spot I am pointing at here. How does that area come off?

Should come off with just a slight tug, or use a plastic pry tool.

Use a pry tool to get it started. After that it's just a firm pull downward from the back side of it and it should come out.

Sorry if this is a dumb question. You get the power from the mirror cable for the dongar cable right? Why you are removing all that?

    Oooh look, another mod.....
I think some older models (or lower trims) don't have the "power" rear view mirror. But if he does, he can install a FitCamX directly into it, and it will look like OEM. No need for the Dongar adapater.

The few vids I found were for a 4Runner TRD. In them, you simply remove the 2 screws to drop the MTM (?) control dials which exposes the connector. I thought that on the SR5, the sunglass holder would pop out like the dials. It does not. I am a total noob at this dash cam stuff. Any guidance (along with links to products and experiences) would be appreciated. I don't need anything fancy. A basic unit will be fine, but I would like it to pair with my phone.
I am currently looking at getting a Dongar adapter, but I am not sure how many pins my setup has.

Amazon shows FitCamX only works with 2020 and newer 4R's. I have an '18.

Does your 18' look like this? :

If it does, than you can buy the Fitcam for the older model Tacoma's. It will fit. FitCam also makes a "Universal" style that will fit just about any vehicle. You only need power running to the rear view mirror. That's the key.

When I install on my friends cars I just use dashcams with wifi and plug them into 12v outlet. So far I never had challenges except Mazda. Mazda the 12V outlet was powered all the time. Anyways that's not relevant here.
If you want basic any good camera like Viofo or Blackview or any good one plug in to 12v outlet would be the easiest.

It's only in my car I added a wire to battery for parking mode.

This looks the same. You mentioned the Fitcam made for older Tacos will work on my 2018 4R. My Google fu is weak. Got a link. Much appreciated17049195925378634989036722786785.jpg
