4runner wandering especially on highway.

2021 4runner no mods other than trd wheels. Just bought new firestone destination le3 tires. I've had a number of alignments done and can't seem to get this fixed. Most recently I had the caster increased from under 3 degrees to where it is now. I'm constantly having to put in little corrections while driving and it's especially bad on the highway. Really at the end of my road with this vehicle. Any help appreciated. Attached my alignment for feedback.

 

Did it behave the same way on the previous tires?

 

What tire pressures are you running?

 

I'm not 100 percent certain. I only had the old rims on for a day before putting the new ones on, I should try and put them back on. Just wondering if anyone sees anything bad about this alignment.

 

Just checked today and 32 all around.

 

Everything looks within specs. I would put the old wheels and tires on. See if you get the same results. PITA, but would at least give you some data.

 

That's a good idea. It is a pita but I'm ready to sell this if I can't get it sorted. Appreciate your reply.

 

Before selling try putting
Bilstein 5100 shocks on. They are about $400 for the set and that may help a lot. I think a good bit of 4Runner wandering is caused by the very soft stock suspension. If you don’t have kdss, it’s even worse.

Sounds like a toe issue to me. Had similar experience when I had the lift removed. Took it back and they readjusted the toe, now it’s good.

 

Toe is in spec though and that little bit of toe-in should help stabilize the steering.

 

Try to increase pressure to 36 psi and see if makes any difference.

I can't believe how much of a difference this made. So my tpms seem a couple psi higher than the tire guage. I added 36 psi and it really firmed up the ride. Feel a bit silly i didn't check sooner. Thank you so much this was a huge help

Yeah it definitely did.

 

I run 40PSI cold pressure since 2022. No such Issues

 

I hated how mine drove after installing Falken AT3Ws on the stock ORP suspension. You could really feel how soft the suspension is after the tire swap. I'm now running Bilstein 6112/5160 on Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT tires and the ride is a night and day difference. The truck feels much more stable and planted now.

I also had a similar experience with getting my alignment sorted out. I ended up having to take it to an off road specialty shop that was finally able to get everything dialed in for me.

 

I run 44psi but that is because I have stock size LT's rather than the P-rated tires they come with....

 

What's your wear pattern like?

 

Just my. 02, I put the 5100s at the .85 setting and wow,it made a huge difference in the wandering and nose dive.

 

21' SR5P, Michelin Defenders. The 5100's are a game changer. TP makes some difference but getting that ridiculous stock shock setup replaced did the trick for me. I'm good.

 

It is the nature of the beast. Few people suggested to set caster above max (4-5 degrees) and firmer shocks....

I am still dealing with wandering. 265/70/17 Wildpeak AT3W, Bilstein 5100. Alignment is good. Caster 3.5. No bad bearings or suspension. Tried 32psi, 36psi, no change-still wanders quite a bit on the highway. Any thoughts?

 

Even without wind?

 

Yes. Wind of course makes it much worse.

 

How are your ball joints and bushings?

 

While the rubber looks a little aged-no movement or slop that I could make happen.
