Spare tire, need same rim?

Ok going to 285s with different rims. Replacing the stock trd off road wheels with probably Methods.

Plan on replacing the spare tire with a 285 tire matching the other four.

Question is do I keep the spare tire steel rim? Or replace with a 5th new rim. Will the difference in offset/backspace make a difference if have to run my spare?

So I've done a lot of research into the same question and the true spare steel wheel specs. I believe it's same width (7.5") and same offset (+15mm)/backspace (4.5") on OffRoad's as the factory wheels, but heavier.
This fall I had a 285/70 installed on the spare after I removed all surface rust, and performed the 3-step POR15 painting process. But the paint is because I had never dropped the spare on my 2016 since new.
The steely is around 30lb I'm told, ORP wheel is 25lbs.
So if you run 4x285's and then add the spare with a 285 (as opposed to the off-size factory H/T 265), only in emergencies as I do, I believe 4R ride would be relatively comfortable temporarily.
But if one was to run the spare as a 5th wheel in the rotation, the weight difference I believe creates an issue regarding balance and you definitely want to cough up the money for 5 of the same wheel.

 

Just get a 5th wheel and TMPS sensor so not only do you an identical setup in the event you need to get out of trouble on the trails, but you'll be able to do 5 tire rotations and extend overall tread life.

1 . Curious what's the width & offset of the Method wheel you're looking at, and its weight (probably an aluminum wheel)
2 . I would hold onto and never sell your quality spare wheel, regardless
3 . If you haven't already, sell the factory 265 highway terrain tires (mine were Duelers), they're shite
4 . If you do sell your ORP wheels, know what you have, sell for more money than I did

As long as you don't go bigger than 33's with the tires, the 5th wheel/tire can be stored in the factory location and be perfectly safe.

Yes will sell my off road wheels with the tires, will have around 7,000 miles on them. Or could separate the tires and wheels and sell separate

Sure thing, I sold my wheels with tires on as well, gone in 2 hours FB Marketplace.
Like our friend said, ideally buy a 5th wheel and perhaps store it underneath full time. OE sale money can offset that cost. But for me, at the cost of my wheels/tires, a 5th wasn't necessary for my 4R use. Spare steely 285 gets me outta the bush and home.

 

What's the issue with the new wheel being aluminum? If installed correctly you won't damage the rim or tire when putting them in the factory location.

Removed my spare a couple times now, after the rim got POR15 I haven't reinstalled, it's too pretty haha.
I dunno if I'd be super comfortable with a 5th expensive Mickey Thompson 9" wheel under there, like when wheeling.

How far off-grid do you intend to go? If it's within say 1000 miles of civilization, you can run a mismatched undersized spare with no issues. Feel free to experiment with 3x 285 tires and the stock spare. In all likelihood everything will work, no ABS/VSC issues, adaptive cruise still works, etc.

 

I have always been told running a different size tire messes with differential. Anyone shed some light? I do the 5 wheel rotation and bought matching wheel so doesn't affect me.

 

^Open diff, so no issues with running mismatched tires on a temporary basis.

 

I just did this. I originally only ordered four new wheels when adding my suspension, these wheels were expensive and figured I'd buy a fifth later. Well I rock rashed the hell out of one so figured it was a good time to order a new one and make the rashed wheel my spare. I hung it valve stem side up and added a lot of electrical tape to the hoist plate to help keep steel plate to aluminum wheel hub chaffing to a minimum (due to any vibration), these aren't torqued to 80+lbs like when they're mounted to the hubs to I wanted to stay safe until I find a permanent location for the spare.
