I barely have a 1000 miles on my 2023 so I don't have a long history. I am wondering what your best mpg has been? I know the published mileage is between 15-19. I thought about this today while driving home on I-95 in my 14 year old Expedition with a 5.4 liter V8. It cracked 20.5mpg at 70-80 mph. It's the highest I have seen, beating a 4 liter V6 that is lighter by 1200 lbs. Where does the gas go in the 4Runner?

After a few thousand miles you should be between 17.5 - 19.5 maybe higher depending on your load out, set up and driving style.

Whole tank 22.2 on the interstate between Atlanta and Charlotte, 70-75 mph. All stock with Duncraps that came on it new. Can get higher on short trips on slow 2-lanes.

27+? 39mph means a lot of city driving. You have some 'splaying to do.

NO city driving at all. That's what kills your mileage...stop signs and stop lights. The above was recorded driving good dirt roads at about 45-50 mph with NO starting or stopping.

My current unconfirmed record (haven’t filled up yet) is 23.5 MPG on a drive from Austin to Dallas. So far the computer has been reasonably accurate but up to 0.9 MPG off.

That drive was done initially at 68-72 MPH but settled into 70 MPH for the remaining 3/4 or so.

City driving is dropping it fast so when I fill up we’ll see what it says since the computer is estimating something like 22.7 now.

Update: Computer said 22.4, calculations yielded 21.8 MPG.

On the way down I was a little faster, around 72-75 and that gave me 20.5 MPG and a lot of Hill Country roads with a little city driving and some lower speed dirt roads (exercising 4WD) yielded 20.7. (both calculated)

With a little more “normal” highway driving without getting aggressive the 19 highway rating sounds pretty spot on.

Stock everything, relatively new Defender LTX’s. (and if anyone cares, 75W-90 in the differentials)

Anyways, YMMV. The 4Runner sure likes to drink when accelerating compared to cruising and I bet the Explorer does too. If you compare Fuelly results the 4Runner is pretty ahead of the 4th gen Explorer on average albeit the latter has less data points.

I’m pretty sure it has a 6-speed auto paired with the V8 which I bet helps. (since I hear the V8/6 speed GX and Borrego get comparable MPG to their V6/5 speed brethren)

This post is like dumb kids discussing their grades. I haven’t got anything above 17. I am happy with my choice however, I knew what I was buying.

I've only clocked 1400 miles since buying it 3 months ago myself, but dont really even look at the average mpg's. I DO notice the gas gauge moves a lot quicker than my other vehicles though...LOL.

It's directly proportionate to your acceleration and how much you hit the brakes. You can do 22mph or you can do 16 mph. 100% how you drive. If your 4r looks like a monster truck, you're screwed either way.

Nah bro, he's got one of those K&N Air Filters on his truck. You know, the kind that people claim give them another 5HP & 5 more MPG's.

19.6 is my best ever on a drive from Austin to Denver. 19 was my second best on a drive from Austin to Los Angeles.

However, I don’t have the lightest foot and I’m constantly at at least 80mph.

During the bullshit in 2020, when the traffic was light and my 4R was stock, I was consistently getting 22-24 mpg. Now, not so much.

Hand calculate the mileage. I don’t believe the lie o meter, it’s calculated off algorithms.

Best I ever got was 24.6 on a trip from Central New York to Rhode Island. Had 436 miles showing on the trip-odometer, and had another 70 remaining till empty when we got back.

I think the planets had aligned correctly, there was very little traffic, it was cool enough that we didn't need the AC, and perhaps there was a tailwind. This was doing about 70 mph the whole way.

This was also 100% stock on Bridgestone dueler HT's, and I hand calculated the MPG when filling up.

20.3mpg, with Blizzak snow tires going 800miles R/T across the width of Washington state. Cruise set to speed limit-65 to 70mph. Rolling gentle hills and one decent mountain pass. This with 300lbs of crap in the trunk, 2 people. No a/c, ambient temps 30-50f.
