Good morning! Yesterday I picked up a 1985 Toyota 4 Runner, a project for my 15 year old son. We got this from his grandfather and plan on restoring this unit! Problem is, I’m a diesel guy, I don’t know anything about these 1985 Toyota 4 Runners. Looking to find guidance on this forum with you guys!

Looks pretty nice on the outside, it should be a nice little project. Does it run? Welcome to the forum.

Cleans up real good, what’s the mileage? I’m guessing it’s a 22RE engine which are good engines. Good for your son/father relationship working on vehicles. Safe one too! Welcome to the forum!

Welcome from Wisconsin! If you're a 'diesel guy', working on a 4Runner will be a walk in the park for you. The info you need will probably be here... use the 'search' box in the upper right of the forum, there is tons of info here. Good luck... very cool 4Runner. A fantastic way to teach your son mechanical skills and for you to learn about 4Runners.

Mileage is 130k, tag shows the engine to be a 22R-EC.

Thanks, so we cleaned it up, has some rust spots on the body, frame / undercarriage is in pretty good shape. She will run, but she ain’t happy. 110psi on three cylinders, but the last cylinder shows 90psi. So I am thinking a long block is in my future.

Been a while since I posted anything but she’s all torn down. Engine just came back from the machine shop and hopefully I’ll get the truck running in about 3 weeks. Waiting on parts mostly. I ordered damn near everything they had on the 22RE Performance website. Radiator hoses, power steering hoses, heater hoses stainless coolant pipes etc.
New AC compressor, starter, power steering, brake booster, master cylinder, alternator, fuel pump, sending unit, fuel tank, drum brakes, rotors, calipers, pads, steering knuckle rebuilt kit, inner / outer bearings. And a lot more. So far no big issues other than everything I touch on this 39 year old truck turns to shit. Lots or wire harness repairs.

    Alright fellas!

Plan was to have her completed today. Unfortunately, when I pulled the injectors to re-seal them I found the injectors to be in pretty bad shape. I reached out to LCE Performance and decided to send my OE injectors to them. I also sent them the cold start injector, it was just one big ball of soot when I pulled it. In about two weeks I should get them back along with a new fuel dampener and I ordered a new fuel pressure regulator just in case. I also had to chip out the old seals from the fuel rail.

In the meantime I put the motor at top dead center, installed the rebuilt distributor and finished installing the new hardware I ordered from 22RE Performance.

I’m heading back offshore for a few weeks so when I get back I’ll put the fuel rail back together, put the engine in the truck and put the top of the intake on and we should be good to go.
