The coil element burners cook better than glass top in my opinion, but they are ugly and a pain in the ass to clean.

 

And if you have a gas water heater, you can take a hot shower with any residual water in the tank!

Can’t read the whole article without a subscription but the chart is telling.

 

Is it fair to chart any vehicle sales right now with the interest rates being so high? Haven’t all car sales stagnated somewhat?

I do believe if EVs are ever going to be more widely accepted, they need to be much cheaper too.

 

This chart is since last April. I don’t think interest rates have affected car sales much since then, or not enough to impact EV sales by 40%. Not sure though.

 

It was an introduction where expectations versus reality were contrasted.

Other examples were given.

Trust me, there was no shortage of talking about the expectations associated with the birth of our Lord and Savior versus the reality of what happened that night that we have decided to celebrate in late December.

My denomination is probably one of the few where you don’t hear politics from the pulpit. There’s absolutely no shyness when it comes to what scripture has to say, and how they interpret it, but I have never heard a word for or against any particular politician or political party out of a pastor’s mouth.

 

Which vehicle?

 

Given their range figures, the only reason you’d need to recharge is if they gave you a vehicle without a full state of charge.

Which given rental car companies, is entirely possible.

You can supposedly get 200 miles of charge in 15 minutes at a supercharger, which ain’t shabby. Obviously full charges take longer, but nobody charges their battery to full - we never charge ours above 80%.

Oof. I'm not anti- electric, I think they'd be great for the daily commute and runs to the grocery, which is what people use their cars for 90+ % of the time. It's those half a dozen times a year when I want to road trip that is the issue. Whether in my 4R or Tundra, I can go 400 - 500 miles on a single load of fuel (closer to 400, as I don't even like to run too close on gas). Range anxiety is a thing, add in finding a reliable charging station... sorry, not for me. At least not yet.

Going back to the daily commuter, I think EV's would have a solid chance if they can get pricing down to mid $20k including house charger set up for a basic EV. I could see that pricepoint having solid demand/success in the cities and suburbs. There could even be a lot of takers in small rural towns. Those who live in BFE, however, I doubt would buy in or benefit. But those outliers are relatively few when looking at the overall picture. The question is, if EV pricing was more affordable to the average (or slightly below average) consumer in the most populated areas, would the current electric grid be able to handle the added demand when all of the large cities and surrounding suburbs plug in their EV at 6:00pm?

 

I suspect the cost savings would pay for the occasional rental car and a few cans of febreeze.

The Chevy Bolt EV hit the mid-20s price point, and GM pays for the charger installation -- you could use the portable charger that comes with it, or get a permanent wall mounted one like we did to get some extra juice. That being said, GM has seen fit to stop making the Bolt. Brilliant car, so of course it gets killed.

You can actually set up charging to occur only at certain times of the day. My neighbor is on a time of day plan, and he sets his to charge after 8pm. We don't bother with scheduling because we're on the flat rate plan -- I use the AC a lot more than he does, so my costs would be higher if I changed plans.

Where we live is basically the edge of the burbs in our metropolitan area...for now. It certainly is making sense for us, and in a perfect world, I'd throw some money at solar panels so that I can run the AC at 72 degrees all summer long.

Ditto on the 20k-ish commuter, and ditto what @bassist said about the Bolt.

The commuter/city car is the perfect EV application, for those affluent enough to have a place to charge one.

For the road trips, I think we need charging times around half an hour, and EV stations that are more than just chargers. 300 miles is about 4 hours, at the 4 hour mark I'm ready to get out of the car to stretch and hit the head. I also might need to take my dog for a little bathroom break, and get something to eat. That can easily fill half an hour. Not the end of the world to take a half hour or hour stop on an all day trip.

 

If I have to charge for 30 minutes every 300 miles, EV isn't for me. Here's me: get off the freeway, pull up to the pump, fill up, go pee if necessary, back on the road. 10 minutes tops. Guy at his EV still has 20 more minutes. Whether that ever gets better remains to be seen, but if I need 30 minutes to get 300 miles, it's no good on a road trip - for me. Not sure if 30 minutes gets you 300 miles today...?

 

Fair enough but everything is not side-by-side here. Recharging 300 miles for 30 minutes will cost a lot less than refilling with gas. Are you willing to chill for 20 extra minutes to save, say, $15-$25 per fillup? Some people value their time differently, and the time to recharge is not a big deal to them. To others, it is. That is why gasoline vehicles are sold and EV's are sold. You have a choice. As technology advances, electric "fill ups" will become faster. The differential between gas fillup time and electric will lessen, and then what will be the next gripe?

When I had my Volt, which had a relatively small battery compared to a full EV, the 60 mile range would cost me about $1.10 in electricity. Whereas, the gas to go 60 miles in that car @ 40mpg was more like $5. That adds up over time (daily).

 

For a few road trips per year, no, I would not want every recharge to be a half hour or longer.

 

I agree, neither would I. But a lot of people (I would surmise the same people who are buying EV's) dont mind. Every year we road trip to Florida for our cruise or to Rhode Island to visit family. Driving the hybrid requires no charge time, we cruise at 75-80mph easily and achieve 40-50mpg. Thats good enough for me.

 

Yeah, hybrid is a different discussion. IMO, that's currently the best of both worlds.

 

I've owned one since 2012. But also have had my truck/SUV too for "when I need it" i.e. snow, towing, etc etc. Honestly, hybrids have been extremely underestimated until recently. I hope they serve as a viable alternative to EV's.

 

I wasn’t a fan of electric at all but now that I have a 4Runner and a hybrid rav4 I can’t see myself daily driving anything other than a hybrid. It’s really the best of both worlds with Toyotas reliable hybrid system. I get a range of 480-500 miles from winter to summer so realistically a 470-490 usable range before I have to fill up so I’m very happy about that.

 

And the Rav4 Prime is a great marriage of electric and gas. 0-60 in 5.5 ain't shabby, and MPGs are good, too.
