Can anyone who's taken delivery of a 2024 with Multi-Terrain Monitor verify if the camera resolution is still the worst ever in automotive history? Just hoping if they did resolve it a fix could be in the pipe for the rest of us suffering in silence.

    Oooh look, another mod.....

Oh. Sorry, that was a serious question. The answer is NO. The camera resolution resembles that of an 80's video game. I'm sure the resolution will be fixed when they roll out the 2025's (the new body style).

Still potato quality, awaiting for some enterprising person to jump at the chance to update these camera(s).

I've thought about posting a "What-The?" about this too. It's pathetic. I have the MTM on our 22 Limited and the standard (rear-only) camera on our 21 Venture.

Even though the 21 sees the rear only, its camera image is crisp and you can actually use it. The MTM on the 22 - even when using the rear-only view - is pathetic. I did mention it to our Toyota dealer (when it was in for an oil change) thinking it had to be broken or not working right and the reaction was "yeah, well that's just the way it is - we know it's lousy, we hear this a lot, Toyota knows, but we can't really do anything about it and since the Gen 5 4Runner is at the end of its run, we're doubting anything will ever get done to fix this..."

The thing that kinda gets me is this isn't consistent with Toyota's otherwise stellar commitment to (i) getting components right when they're deployed on a production vehicle or (ii) not putting that component on at all. For me, I'd rather have no MTM vs. one that is so far below standards.

Toyota is known for shitting the bed on infotainment related things. There was even a class action lawsuit about Entune systems being so bad they boarded on non functional.

It’s bad resolution but still better than not seeing those angles. The overhead view on my ‘23 MTM has been useful in parking situations. I am sure it will be helpful in many off road situations

Guess I didn't know about the class suite about EnTune... With that in mind, it's even more surprising that Toyota knowingly put crappy tech in our trucks, especially video tech - knowing how some of us use our trucks (backwoods, mountains, field work, etc.).

Example of a case for me when a GOOD front facing MTM camera would really be nice! This a double track I do a lot. I marked the first down-slope with a red arrow. It drops about 40 feet (note the top of the utility poles as a height reference) and is normally simple, but gets muddy. One look with a decent MTM camera on front view and you're golden - until then, I'm getting out and looking before we descend.

Cost/benefit. They know the 4Runners will sell regardless of the camera and infotainment systems.

A couple of examples: I did 6+ years of quality testing & development and validation testing for the high-end vehicles (I'm still bound by a confidentiality agreement for a bit longer so I have to keep it vague). I had a project where the manufacturer wanted to try to do a special edition version of a car with the power turned waaaay up as a final hurrah for an outgoing model. The instrument cluster on the car couldn't display an apostrophe in a paired phone's name - it showed it as an underscore. The voice command was pathetic and the backup camera was horribly pixilated. It was a $400,000+ car that was using a very old infotainment system of a previous generation of $40,000 vehicle from in the same auto group. It wasn't worth installing a better system because nobody was going to skip buying it because the radio sucked (the amps, speakers, and sound quality was great). That car had to use a steering rack without the stabilizer because the gigantic carbon ceramic brakes needed cooling ducts that took up too much space, which resulted in a 4mph range on chip seal roads where the steering wheel would shake like hell - like 3/4 inch of back and forth. It was a known and accepted problem that didn't warrant a steering rack redesign for the handful of cars with that specific brake setup.

I had another even more expensive one, a "production ready" limited release $750,000 vehicle coming with a small non-touchscreen radio out of a decade-old base trim mid-sized sedan. That car also had a high revving lots of cylinder engine that was running off a single ECM that didn't have enough computing power or resolution in the tuning tables to let it run smoothly during the mid-rpm mid-throttle driving. Light load cruising and high load power were optimized, the rest was a drivability shit show. That was considered acceptable, nobody actually cared.

Now the 4Runner is not on that same level of vehicle, but it is similar in the sense that it typically attracts a very specific type of buyer. Those buyers are the kind that will not just go buy a Honda Passport because the 4Runners tech is crap and it gets poor fuel economy.

There was a running joke on the engineering side that "it's not a bug, it's a feature"

Yeah… that’s a no dawg. The resolution is quite possibly the absolute worst in the entire industry but I’ll take it. It definitely helps in the tight parking spots…haven’t tried it on the trails yet.

The difference here is the 4R HAD an acceptable camera and resolution, no where near as clear as comp but OK. They intentionally took a 15 year step back in time with the MTM resolution with from what I understand, is a hardware compatibility issue. Just dial the rear cam back to good and shut the extra crap cams off and I'd be happy. It was a bridge too far for Toyo and they should have just left well enough alone if they weren't willing to do it right. Now we're stuck with 4 completely inadequate cams instead of one decent one and someone's going to get run over because of their mistake.

That’s the standard system, you could have had that if you didn’t buy something optioned with MTM. Did you not try it before you bought it?

I’m an old school Toyota fanboy who will defend their unwillingness to adapt new tech to the grave…..but the camera quality is pretty unacceptable lol.

How much more would using better resolution cameras have added to the price? They’re already printing money with the margins they’re making on selling a 15 year old truck with minimal updates in 2023 that they keep jacking up the price on. No excuse imo.

I love the rest of the low tech identity of the truck, even don’t care for the slapped on driver assist stuff they put in the ‘22+. But if you’re gonna include some simple piece of “tech” like a camera, at least make it decent when you’re charging 2024 prices on a 2009 truck!

I ended up with with a 2023 ORP that had the cameras and running boards that I really did not want, but salesman was quick to discount vehicle $3200 off MSRP so I took it. I have come to like the cameras for parking in garage, launching my boat and generally helps in tight spots. I agree that the resolution is poor, but it does the job.

Of the four Toyotas (2016, 2019, 2022 and the 4Runner) in our family that came with preinstalled cameras, the 2023 4Runner has the worst resolution, but it is good enough to make sure I'm not going to back over something in the driveway or a parking lot.

It’s only $850 for MTM. A bargain compared to getting stuck with buying a VIN that comes with the $400 Toyota cooler lol

My '23 ORP replaced the Outback I drove for 14 years (and still do sometimes). The MTM is a whole lot better than no cameras at all.
