So I took my new 4runner in for an oil change at 1000 miles just to check the filter ,typical break in crap. Dealership couldn't quite understand. Any we got into the discussion about the 10,000 mile intervals and the guy wasn't hearing nothing I had to say. I will go 5 grand but will never be convinced to do 10,000 miles. Anyway I asked why the vehicles going to other countries that use metric had their oil change intervals at 10,000 kilometers, thats just a little over 6000 miles, still waiting on an answer on that.

Welcome. Another oil change opinion thread will open the floodgates. Keep in mind that full synthetic oil doesn't begin to oxidize until about 12-15k miles, regardless of color. Older non-synthetic dyno oils begin to oxidize at about 5-7.5k miles. If you change your oil and filter at 5k miles, it won't hurt anything and helps clean out contaminants. If you decide to change the oil at 10k miles, I would replace the filter at 5k intervals and top off the oil.

Personally, it is so inexpensive to change oil that I do mine at 5k intervals. I also have a lift in my garage, so it makes it easy.

I personally change mine with Toyota OEM filter/oil/crush washer every 5K miles along with tire rotation and tire air pressure check. Cheap insurance and I’m retired with nothing else to do but play my guitar, haha.

its brand new and only has 1000 miles in it.

I did my first oil change at 2000 miles along with the rear diff. (Both switched to synthetic).

After that, my oil gets changed every 8000.

Its a Toyota, so I plan on never changing the oil. The factory fill oil is from Japan and is better than it is over here, so it will be fine

Canada is on the metric system and Toyota Canada states to change the oil every 16,000kms (9,400miles). Climate and driving conditions in other regions are some additional factors that may alter the oil change intervals.

I personally change mine every 8,000kms (5,000miles) as it amounts to one extra oil change per year. I can tell you with certainty that I would never regret changing it sooner, may not be able to say the same about changing it later.

I too engage in the 5k interval.... Stress more about When I should be changing guitar strings than stressing about the oil interval on mine.

Why? To get rid of all the contaminents that might be floating around during the break in. Plus peace of mind that I’m putting in some good fluids.

That's the reason I did it at 1000 and the service manager acted like he had never heard of such a foolish thing, especially wanting to see the old filter. I got peace of mind, didn't see any sparkles at all.

Ask 100 peeps get 100 answers.

I’m planning for 5,000 mile oil, 10,000 mile filter but that may change depending on my mood. 7,500 both is on the table too.

You’ll find people going 3-5-10,000 miles, using 0W-20, 5W-30, talking about Puerto Rico oil recommendations, their Tacoma made it 200,000 miles on 10k, normal vs. severe duty schedules, “here’s my 17k mile Tacoma UOA”, “this is what the engineers say” etc.

We can only advise but we’re no hive mind, just know whatever happens is on you.

Don’t put much stock in dealer staff, there’s a debate about break-in oil changes as it is.

I changed the oil and filter on my new 23 ORP at 1000 miles. I found some metal in the filter. I want it to last, so to me its just cheap insurance. To each there own....

Gotta love it, lol. The service manager should be grateful you are coming back to do the (in HIS mind, premature) oil change and supporting his service department. Just another reason a lot of the time dealer service departments get a bad rap and are avoided like the plague!

I normally do my own but my buddy has his lift tied up for the foreseeable future and I'm too gimped up to be crawling around on the cold ass concrete floor. Did my pickup a few weeks back and took damn near an hour.
