Yes I sent you to the suspension forum because there is tons of info on all the brands common here. You want reviews that will be the place. Unfortunately its not the one single brand you want.

Again you will not get what you want here regarding RC. Its a plain fact that it not popular here.

If you really want a RC lift go for it. No one is stopping you. But the fact that you want an actual review on a suspension pretty much never used by anyone on this site good luck.

Then you bitch and moan when we (I) can't give you the info.

Two know-it-alls jerking each other off but totally unable to provide any useful information to the discussion.

 

I was only able to provide feedback based on my experience with a Jeep Wrangler. If you really want in-depth feedback on Rough Country suspension offerings, the Jeep forums may be your only source. A lot of Jeep owners will go with RC because of the low price point, but even there RC is discouraged by most of the Jeep community. Harsh ride, short life span of the shocks are two of the most often cited shortcomings.

I can count on two fingers, I think, the times I've seen Rough Country suspension even mentioned (mostly by newcomers) on 4Runner forums, so there's not a lot of owners to provide the type of feedback you're looking for...

 

Cant speak for RC on any 4runner I had but I will say when I started in truck and off roading, I did have a 98 Tahoe with RC 3 inch lift.. oh wait, it was Rancho Suspenion (RS) lol, the 9 way adjustable shocks.

Ride was ok, but nothing to brag about. Honestly I would probably go with RS before RC. Just my thought and reading reviews, it may seem R&D in RC for import trucks/suv may be lacking. Maybe it might be better in others.

Theres alot of info in this forum and many that had commented, I would agree. Spend alittle more and you will get a better suspension setup. Lots of great companies out there have been tested and proven. Im sure positive reviews on whatever company you decide to go will make your decision at the end. But dont come back here complaining cause we might just kick you out of the forum lol, jk jk.

Good unbiased review of Rough Country, not bringing all the baggage of "they just suck because..." I prefer data backed information.

Is it the best? No. You want the best go get Kings/Icon/Fox (and you guys can debate which of those 3 are the best for the next 200 posts - I know I have my opinion). Will it get the job done? Well, I'll let you decided.

That's a bad place to make decisions. Owner forums and FB groups are much better imo. Owners website can very well delete bad reviews. Again forums and FB groups are not 100% true either as they are also a business. Business pay forums to promote and protect their image. Even places like Yelp has similar thing, business owners have to pay to keep 5star reviews.

 

That being said, it seems there are still many satisfied customers that have that RC lift kit on their 4runner.

As some of the post alluded to, I read many favorable reviews of the kit, yet I don’t see many reviews of those who ran the kit and then reported issues/problem. Seems most who say the kit is crap are those who don’t actually have it. Just that it is cheap.

reviews are always subjective as well. For example you stated your OME lift kit had a rough stiff ride, but you put the wrong springs on it that ARB/OME does not recommend, unfortunately cause a shop sold you the wrong kit with mismatched parts.

 

I’ll probably not go with this kit, as still debating between Ironman foam cell, Dobinson and old man emu bit it seems it is a decent kit from many that have owned it and want a lift for a daily driver, occasional weekend overlander/dirt trails.

 

Avoid the N3 shocks and "struts" because they are twin-tube. The twin-tube design is horrible for cooling, as the nitrogen between the outer- and inner tube acts as an insulator for the oil in the inner tube. At least opt for the RC M1 monotube line, or go with Bilstein 5100s.

 

I see this as someone saying I'm debating between Honda and Toyota. For example there is a huge difference between old man emu nitro sports vs old man emu bp-51. For Dobinson knowledge members like Crikeymike has shared some good information in this forum. Hope you can search for that info.

Dobinson and Old Man Emu use twin tubes as well IIRC, with very little issues. As I understand it twin tubes provide protection.

 

Kind of would like to hear his new view on Ironman UCAs, since in the past he really praised them as being the best, but now they have had a major recall on them and replacing with various mixtures of assorted ball joints.

 

I know you have some positive comments on the foam cell pros, and take your word on that as you have done some good testing yourself. Keep your videos coming, they are good to go

Dobinson and OME use twin tubes because they are cheap, same reason the Toyota black Tokicos use twin tubes. Dobinson and OME use monotube designs on their higher-tier IMS and BP-51 lines, respectively. Monotube allows a wider piston within a given envelope, and dissipates heat better. That's why all the performance shocks from Bilstein, Fox, King, Icon, ADS, Elka, Radflo, Sway-A-Way... are monotube.

The twin tube's protection aspect is dubious. In my local Toyota off-road club with ~15 active vehicles on trail runs over the last 3 years, two OME yellow rear shocks broke at the top stem, one OME yellow front shock bushing disintegrated after a year, and one OME yellow front shock's internal stop collapsed (causing the shock to over-extend and bind the CV joint). No shock suffered a dented body, OME or otherwise.

 

Well I have their winch 9.5 pro on their bumper and it's the tits. My lift is bilstein though.

 

Only thing I have personally seen fail is a pair of SPC UCAs where the ball joint broke.

Suprised to hear that about OME as they have a reputation of being very durable. Used them for years on Hilux and Pajeros overseas hard use never an issue and had set on my FJ cruiser for several years rode well.

some of the more expensive ones you mentioned icon, sway, etc - don’t they require more maintenance, problems with rust, exposed pistons, etc?

I was all set to try out a Ironman set until their UCA issue. But seems now rectified I hope.
Seems if push anything hard enough you will have problems. I will never buy SPC though again, if the way they broke on me has been at higher speed around a corner on the Highway, I’d be dead, instead happened at low speed around a corner in my neighborhood.

 

There's nothing wrong with twin tube shocks. Id go with dobinson twin tubes over 5100 or eibach pro truck shocks anyday.
