Question for you guys that have added a matching spare tire for use in rotation. I went thru the menu adding the new TPMS sensor for spare. Can I rotate the spare now and new TPMS will be recognized on one of the wheels or do I need to go to dealer to be added.

It does not show the spare on my TPMS display currently. I can live with this as long as no TPMS errors while doing rotation. Thanks for any input. In the manual it shows pic of 5 tires with tpms listed.

I have a matching spare with no TPMS sensor. This way I do not forget to repair the main tire. if I have the TPMS senor on the spare, knowing me, I will forget to repair the flat tire.

I just went through the same thing. I purchased a new wheel/TPMS for the spare only to find out that it must be programmed for it to register in the dash. Toyota Techstream appears to be the only way to program it, so it will have to be done at a dealer. Some people have had success in having them program it for free, while others were charged an hour’s worth of labor from what I saw.

I decided it wasn’t worth it in the end. I’ve got an Autel programming tool, so I just wipe the TPMS data and recode the new wheel locations when I rotate the tires. The learning function on the 2020s and newer can take hours for them to be recognized properly, and in my case (2021 TRD ORP) my two rear tires never registered to the correct locations on the dash. The ECU would probably get even more confused if you have a spare fitted with TPMS as well, since that sensor would be broadcasting its data during the learning process. Maybe someone with a Limited can chime in if they’ve done their own rotation. Most people rotate at a dealer or a tire shop, so the techs (I assume) recode TPMS as part of their process during a rotation.

Long story short, the capability is there for it to display on the dash but Techstream is needed to write/enable the spare’s new TPMS code to the ECU. Once it’s done in Techstream, it’ll stay on the screen for good.

Didn't the Limited come with matching spares?

Yes my understanding is limted's come with matching wheel and programmed TPMS. Not sure how many limited owners are rotating spare.

Yep, the Limited has a matching spare with TPMS. The dash on the Limited displays all 5 wheels. The other trims have the capability of displaying the 5th (spare) wheel but must be programmed with Techstream to display it. Obviously this is only possible if you install a TPMS sensor in your spare. When I replaced my steel wheel with a matching wheel I added a TPMS sensor to it to be able to perform 5-way rotations.

I have a 2015 LE and the TPMS light is always lit. I’ve had the sensors “pinged” and the light would reset, but after a while it comes back on.

I’m use to it now and just check my pressure manually. You know, I need to keep my skills sharp!

From my research, when I got the matching spare, @billandmichele is correct with their statement. I also do the five tire rotation and all you have to do is, while you are parked, go through the dash options to find TPWS menu in the Vehicle Settings and then hold the select button for a few seconds. It will then say something like "Registering sensors." Make sure you do this on a drive that will be about 10 minutes or longer because it does take some time to register and you will have to redo it if you turn the car off before it's finished. There was a forum post here or in the other 4Runner forum with some more detail.

Thanks this is what I did after having TPMS added to spare. Are you doing this after each rotation? I can't see the TPMS for spare so wasn't sure if it picked up the new TPMS.

I’m going to add a sensor (and matching wheel), because I want to rotate all 5 tires. I’d like them to last as long as possible, and when it’s time to get new tires, I may want to switch it up, and it would suck to throw out my never-used 5th tire.

I have a ‘21 Limited and do my own 5 tire rotations. I just reset the TPMS each time and it is usually working again, with tires in the correct spot, by the next day

before i replaced the stock limited tires and wheels, i had all 5 showing in the dash. i programmed the new tires and still see the spare at 55 psi, the pressure the stock tires were at when i bought it.

I rotated in spare tire and did the reset/relearn. Worked just like it should. Not sure it's worth it to me paying dealer to add spare TPMS dash display.

I did too at first, but I wanted it for off road reasons. I'd like to know if the spare I'm assuming is ready to go catches a rock or stick and gets a puncture before I find myself needing it.

Did I miss it? How do you make it reset/relearn if you dont do the techstream thing?

edit: I’d like to rotate a spare myself, but wouldn’t mind avoiding the cost to add the spare tire pressure indication to my dash at the dealer.

Yes, every time I rotate. No problems so far, but if you forget to do the "change wheel set," you will get an error saying the TPWS is malfunctioning.

You just need to follow manual instructions neverevnoughrice mentioned above. Works only thing techstream from dealer will add is seeing TPMS of 5th wheel spare display on dash.

and all you have to do is, while you are parked, go through the dash options to find TPWS menu in the Vehicle Settings and then hold the select button for a few seconds. It will then say something like "Registering sensors." Dealer told me my 21 ECU does not support display of spare. I don't believe them but was 50/50 chance expecting a problem. Nothing urgent will try another dealer when convenient.

I have e a ‘21 TRDP and bought a TRDP wheel for my spare. No TPM in spare but want to put one in. When you say you “went thru the menu adding the new TPMS sensor for spare,” can you be more specific?
Did you buy a tpm for the spare? If so, from dealer or from after-market?
Is there an onboard menu to add a 5th TPM (spare) on the display?

I bought the TPMS from BAM wholesale and went thru TPMS reset process on dash. For me the 5th display of spare does not show on a 21 but still doing 5 wheel rotation.

    Nice.
I bought my TRD wheel for spare from BAM but didn’t think to get the TPM for it. D’uh.

I’ll order one and have it installed.

Then, based on your experience, sounds like it’ll simply remain “dormant” and not show on tpms screen while a spare. But, when placed in rotation, just use reset button to activate?

Correct. Add the TPMS to spare and reset when rotated and your good to go. Maybe it will display for you I have seen mixed results. Dealer told me it would need to be programmed and wasn't worth it to me just to see the spare tire pressure on dash.

    Thanks for sharing your experience.

And, agreed, It would be nice to see spare pressure as insurance but not totally necessary.

I’ve been wanting to buy a diagnostic/programming tool but we own 1 toyota, 2 Porsches and an Audi so not sure any one would handle all that! If anyone knows different, LMK.

Does anyone know if the TPMs sold by Discount Tire would work seamlessly with OEMs? I would need DC to install it anyway so why not buy it from them if it works. Anyone with first-hand experience?

Sounds like an easy fix to me. Thanks for the report.

Believe I’ll head to my local DT store this week, have them put one on my spare and call it a day.

I’ll report back and make sure they wake it up.

Looks like BAM wholesale wants ~$60 online for the OEM sensor. Not bad.
