I have a 2023 4Runner and would like to add OEM running boards. Problem is there is no one OEM running board. There are black, silver, tube, flat etc. Even the Toyota web sites shows many. Any part number you can suggest? Does it require drilling if I decide to install them myself?

    Oooh look, another mod.....

There are many options because people like different looks/styles. It all boils down to

    1) Your budget.
    2) Esthetics.

I'd guess that 99.99% are bolt on, no drilling would be needed. Doing it yourself is easy to do. Even a novice can do it. But you can do it a little faster if you have a helper. They can hold the step in place while you tighten the nuts/bolts.

Thanks for the quick reply. I have the TRD Offroad. Do they require drilling as far as you know? There are also different styles. One is called the iBoard and is squarish looking.

It's my understanding that they do not require drilling. There's a few YouTube video's of guys buying the Toyota factory one's and installing them myself. Toyota actually does a pretty good job of providing various options depending on what someone is needing it for. Me personally, I just want the rocker protection so I ordered the "Rock Rail" as it's described on their site for my TRD Off-Road that's coming in January. It's made with heavy wall DOM tubing and bolts directly to the frame. I actually liked the Toyota Rock Rail better than anything else I had seen aftermarket. Again, I'm not wanting a step though. I don't know if all of their running boards and/or steps bolt to the frame though. Search YouTube for the Toyota step or running board you're looking for, chances are someone picked them up and installed.

All of the Toyota offered non-Limited or Sport running board variants, and most of the aftermarket running board offerings mount to the body using the same 6 bolts and stock mounting holes. There is no difference in the mounting, and none of them require drilling. Anyone can mount these themselves.

The ones @PVT Pablo links above are the most common.

For the ORP, the best match are the OEM offroad ones like these:

If you plan to go offroad, just get some slider steps instead.

And if you do a little searching on FB Marketplace or CL, you can find virtually brand-new OEM sets for under $200.

I have looked a several third party installations on YouTube. The issue is attachment points. I see three equally spaced in the above picture. My 2023 doesn't have them. I see a pair of bolts at the two ends. The two bolts in the middle seem for a different use. I also wonder what tare the factory bolts for? Could they be there for some other reason.2F300706-BCF1-4454-B717-143BF6CA0D50_1_102_o.jpg 37677840-C703-4752-9A6D-F726741F2A44_1_102_o.jpg 0D0BB944-A051-4637-87D0-5F6B7965370F_1_102_o.jpg

Are you intentionally looking for body-mounted instead of frame-mounted hardware?

Brian, those bolts you discovered under the rockers ARE the OEM running board bolts and also the mounting location. You can reuse those bolts with the new OEM running boards, or use the ones that are supplied. In my observation, they are the same. Now I just have an extra set of bolts laying around to use for ???

I recently bought my '23 ORP too, and it also did not come with running boards. I went and immediately ordered the ones in post #2 & #7 on eBay from a Toyota Dealer. It was a 15 minute install. They look great.

I really don't know the difference. I just looked for mounting points.
