Tire and lift recs for daily driver

    Hi all,

    I’m new to 4Runner scene. I have a 2021 TRD Off Road that’s currently stock. I’d like to raise it up a tad and add better tires and wheels. My car is my daily driver, and I do a lot of driving… I’d love recommendations for best modifications (lift, tire size, etc) that will work well for a daily driver and not kill my MPG, but also where I can take it out into the mountains. For tires, was thinking Falken Wildpeaks, but that’s about all I know. Thanks in advance!

    Just leave it stock and maybe put some better tires on it. Don’t fall into the internet “I gotta mod it” trap.

    @Slopemaster I get what you’re saying, though I don't feel like I’ve fallen into that trap. We have a Tacoma that we didn’t lift( but added wheels and tires on and like the look as is. I just happen to like the look of a bit of a lift on the Runners better.

    Oooh look, another mod.....

    A lift will kill your MPG's. It will kill it badly. If you're just going to daily drive and mall crawl, do not get a lift. But you SHOULD getcha' some Wildpeaks, like me:



    I went with Falkens, but stuck with factory size. I did not go up (like some do on this site - to 285's).

    I had a lift and 285’s originally and it only cost me about 1 mpg. I have since gone back to no lift and 265’s and gained that 1 mpg back. For the trails I do, my off road ability has not been compromised.

    I agree with the OP, a mild lift and 285’s looks great on a 5th gen.

    I think the main reason people lose mpg is all the weight they add with bumpers, skids and other overland gear.

    Ditto what Slopemaster and Borracho said - I stayed with OEM size tires but went KO2's - not because they're better than Wildpeaks, but because I'm used to them and did a 1" lift and just leveled it out a bit. No lift at all in the back. It's a daily driver.

    This looks great, and all one really needs for a daily driver. Even stock size All Terrains look significantly bigger than the OEM tires.

    Here’s my rig with stock size tires and no lift. Aggressive A/T tires do give the appearance of being larger than stock. Very satisfied with this setup.

    3/2 Cornfed Lift & Level 285/70R Cooper Rugged Trek Tires Pedal Commander 17" Fuel Bronze Wheels Ceramic Tint
    Wife's Pro comes with Fox suspension. I put a Cornfed brand leveling kit and 285 Cooper's. Ride is still great and with the Pedal Commander the MPG is 17 hwy.

    Over the last few months I installed wildpeaks, Greenlane skid plate, then did bilstein 6112/5100 with a 1” front lift, then added bilstein rear springs for 1” in the back. It’s better than stock both on highway and on trails. Very impressive changes and I can’t detect a downside. Go for it!

    The only thing I have left are Greenlane sliders, which I’ll install next month.

    it looks great!!!! Absolutely love the color an the wheels bring out and extra “pop”.

    I currently get about 19mpg, so I could sacrifice one or two… but maybe I don’t want to now. Haha

    Looks great!!! What did you use for the 1” lift? Again, newbie here. I also really love your roof rack. Is it the TRD Pro rack?

    Thanks. The street tires (Dunlop Duellers) that it came with were fine, but didn't look cool. I had them replaced immediately, so I'm not sure how many MPG's I lost by switching, or how noisy-er the Falken's are compared to stock; but I do average 20 - 21MPG for the tank.

    This is what it looked like the day I picked it up:



    The tires made a HUGE improvement, aesthetically.

    We had Dunlops on our Taco and replaced them with Wildpeaks. There’s a noteable difference, but not too much. I can’t imagine it would be much different with the Runner. I’m thinking that if I go the 33” route the difference will be more noticeable, but I’m unsure. That’s the thing with all this. It’s an investment, and I don’t want to put money out and not be happy with it. Hence me sitting on this decision for so long, then reaching out to others when I’ve been unable to be decisive about it… haha

    Do you have any photos with how this turned out? Seeing how great everyone else’s Runners look has be considering only doing a 1” and keeping the tire size as is.

    I should say that many people on this forum have done lifts successfully using proper parts that can withstand actual off roading. At the time of purchase I was ignorant to all the facts. Since I actually drive off road I knew I had two choices. Install a proper lift $$$, or remove the spacer lift all together. I chose the second option. I really couldn’t justify spending thousands of dollars to gain a couple of inches.

    Looks great! I pick up my '24 TRD OR in about three weeks. New Wildpeaks are going on immediately! I was going to go for the 275's but the stock size look really good! Amazing what changing out the tires does for it! I'm in SoCal but this thing will be making many road trips to Utah and Arizona where I'll be doing back country exploring. After seeing yours I'm thinking I should stay with the stock size and get the extra 1-2 MPG.

    I’ve been happy with stock size. Has worked well on road, snow, and some trail use in Utah. The wild peaks do look, and act, much beefier than the oem tires.

    One of the reasons I was leaning towards the 275's is because you can get them in a load range C. Unfortunately with the stock size Wildpeaks you're stuck with an E. Typically C's round out nicer when you air down. I might go with another brand just to get the C.

    Fifteen52 Analog HD's, Nitto Terragrapplers, 1" spacer lift front, ceramic on all glass.
    I went simple with an Eibach Stage 1 lift. Currently I'm on 265/70 Wildpeaks but I'll be going to 255/80's next.

    The SL makes me nervous because it's only a two-ply rated tire. Mainly wanting to avoid an E since it's such a stiff tire. Need to look at the SL some more.
