Well, first project in my new 99 4Runner is starting so hot. I was changing the rear sensor and it snapped right off. Any tips on what I can do here? My best thought is to just take it to a shop and see what they can do.

also I’m trying to figure out if my system is California emissions or not. It does look to have two cats but I don’t see a sticker under the hood or on the door. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

Howdy! I'm new to this forum so just reading through some posts for information, and one thing I'm trying to figure out on mine is whether the Bank1 O2 sensor is a normal O2 sensor or an A/F Ratio sensor, as I'm aware the 3rd Gen 4Runners used both, depending on California emissions build or not.

As for your O2 sensor bung hole, I do believe you can cut it out with an oxy/acetyl torch, and weld in a new one, the only thing particular about them are the "ears" for the bolt holes, but the sensor itself has threads, and is designed to thread into something, so a replacement bung hold could be one that your sensor threads into. Hope that helps if you haven't solved that already. :)

So, did you eventually figure out how to determine if yours is Cali emissions, thus uses the A/F Ratio sensor? What was the proof? My 2001 also has 2 cats, and I had tried buying a replacement B1 O2 sensor online, but when I installed it, the engine ran like crap, putting the old one in and it ran normally again. But this just proves that the new one was the wrong type, but I don't know how to prove which type I need. Is there something in the VIN label that identifies it as Cali Emissions?

    Thanks!

I took it to a muffler shop here in town and they were able to weld on a threaded insert for me. The only unfortunate part is I had to go offbrand because I couldn’t find a Denso threaded O2 sensor.

as far as the emissions , I believe yours would be California emissions. I did find a patch right under the hood stating that mine was. The bank one will be an A/F sensor so go Denso for that one and you shouldn’t have any problems

Call your dealer with your vin. They know what sensor your car uses. They don't care if you buy from them or not. Get the part number regardless and you should be able to match it to a DENSO.

The AF and O2 sensors should have different connectors if you are going with TOYOTA or DENSO. I do NOT recommend anything else as it won't come with the plug and won't last near as long.
