2017 TRD Pro gas line leak??

Hello!

started to get a weird gas smell that wasn’t all too bad but dropped it at my local Toyota dealer scheduled maintenance anyway. Came back telling me they “saved it” and it doesn’t need a new fuel tank but the pipe that delivers gas from the nozzle to the bottom of the tank is leaking so it needs to be replaced completely.

Said I am lucky that it was the whole $5,000 fix and it’s “only” $1,800 to get it done.

I tried some digging to see anything about this. I’ve got NOTHIN from anything after 2000 lol. Posting for coverage as well as anyone else’s experience here.

Would love some guidance. Feel like I may be getting fleeced as well.

 

It isn't a systemic issue, but the 4Runner fuel tank hangs pretty low, so it's possible for the filler pipe to get damaged by road (or off-road) debris. (You got a Pro so you must be going full-send on trails all the time, right? right? )



Ask the dealer to show you where the leak is. There are two sections of the filler pipe. Lower section (ID 77213E) is <$100 while the upper section (ID 77214) is <$300. However, if the neck on the tank is leaking, then the tank would conceivably need to be replaced. The tank is <$1k (they'd transfer the fuel pump and sending unit from the old tank to the new tank). This is all in part costs not including labor. Not sure where the "$5000 fix" would come from.

 

Lmao I mean obviously I bought the Pro only for the badge

what’s the effort level to get it removed? Chatting with them now and I feel like the labor is punching me in the nuts.

I would ask for proof. Did they smoke test it? Most honest places will have the tech video the item in question.

 

Tank replacement? Can't see it being more than 3 hours.

Post a copy of the estimate here so we can get the full story.

 

Did you have to have the fuel pump replaced per the recall?

What if one of the fuel lines was not properly secured?

had to replace the fuel neck.
Part 77210-35081 - charged me $475 for it
$1400 of labor as well. 7 hours for that?

Terrible experience. I see the part for $275 everywhere online too right now.

And just as I hit send. The check engine light comes on and I am turning around! First time I’ve ever seen that before.

 

By 'fuel neck' - was this everything within the red lines below?

 

I wonder how difficult it actually was to change.

But if its not under warranty stay away from the dealer.

The P/N corresponds to the upper filler pipe that goes all the way to the fuel cap. MSRP on that part is $366. If they're charging you $475 for the part, then the dealer is one of the sleezeball ones charging above MSRP for parts and needs to be put on blast:
