Please tell me what I have to do to stop the autostart from turning off when I open the door? That can't be good for the life of the starter, amongst many other working parts, and it's annoying! Contemplating the Carista app for other options to personalize, anyone know of I can fix this autostart issue with that too?

Sorry, but that's the way it's designed.

Carista - which I have (or any other OBDII management interface) can't modify this function. Summarizing, remote start is cancelled when you open any of the passenger doors. However, you CAN open the rear hatch and it'll keep running.

All I can think of is switching to a key-start 4Runner. I don't think anyone's gotten around that very-intentional behavior of Toyota remote starts combined with push-button start.

Normal for keyless start equipped runners even with an aftermarket remote start. It’s built into the BCM.

    I got you boo.

ALWAYS keep your window rolled down so you can enter through the window. BOOM! Say goodbye to that pesky engine turn off we all love to hate.

It's only on the push to start models. The "Gkey" (physical key) models don't have that issue.

100% True! I have an aftermarket (Accessorides) on my 21 Venture and the factory remote start (with FOB and Toyota app) on the wife's 22 Limited and they both behave exactly that way. No difference.

My 2023 is stock & just last night I used the Auto Start Toyota App on iphone after a trip. When parking lot shuttle dropped me off, I opened rear hatch to load suitcase & yes it did turn off. Are talking about the Carista App???

Hey Kevin - Yes. I was talking about the Carista App and ODBII dongle. But on my 21 and 22 you can remote start (including via the App on the 22 Limited) and the engine keeps running
Hi Kevin - Affirmative. I was talking about the Carista App and Carista OBD2 Dongle that goes with it. FWIW, the remote starting systems on both my 21 Venture (aftermarket remote start - Accessorides) and the factory remote start on our 22 Limited (either via the FOB or the Toyota Connect app) both leave the trucks running (assuming you're within the 10-minute time window) when the rear liftgate is opened. I do it all the time on both vehicles loading/unloading gear for our work. But if you open any of the doors it kills the engine - on both trucks. We did not make any changes to the settings via Carista to enable this functionality. It already did it - and FWIW, we are the original owners of both trucks.

Fords shut off so they can verify the fob level restriction if so applied once they are in the vehicle. They can restrict speed, radio volume etc...No reason the Toyo should, it's a nuisance.

By autostart I assume you mean remote start. It's a safety/theft aspect for the push button start 4R with factory remote start. You don't want someone driving away with your 4R which is happily running with nobody around do you.

You still have to get in and when it detects the fob, you have to press the brake and start while it's running . Our lexus auto start does it.

It was the same on our Honda and nissans too.

You kinda have to do the same with the Gkey, but obviously in a different way.

My Mazda with push button start would stay running when doors were opened and you’d have to press the start button again with the key fob inside the vehicle. The downside is it was cutting power to a bunch of modules to do so which caused the evap system and a couple others to read as not ready for 100 miles after remote starting. Caused me to fail emissions testing twice before figuring out what was going on

this is not a valid excuse.
How would someone drive away with your 4R? The doors are still locked and the key needs to be detected to change into gears. I've had cars with remote start that wouldnt shut off when opening the door and it was not possible to enter the car and shift into gear without the keys

I don't know about worthless. Nice to come out to have heat when you get in vs waiting for the eng. to warm up. Just opinion.

My wife used to go to work at 430am. So she usd it to have a toastey, defrosted 4runner waiting for her in the morning. Just turn the heated seats on and the heater up when you park it the day prior.

How do you figure it is worthless when it has warmed up your vehicle and defrosted snow and ice?

His profile says phoenix, so being from Texas....i could see the worthless part. Up north, not worthless imo. To agree with you on the snow and ice part.
That's why one of my criteria was the Gkey so it didn't do that.

Not worthless in Phoenix either. Leave the AC set to coldest when you leave the car. Very nice when it's 115 outside.

I never leave anything turned on when shutting down a vehicle, radio ,fans A/C, Heat, Defrost, the spike on start-up can cause un-necessary damage ,again me just being anal from my A/C career/experience. But the nice parts is WHEN you turn on the heat/fan it's already warm or the compressor for the A/c is ready!

    Oooh look, another mod.....

I don't see why this mod won't work on 5th Gen 4Runners. My Vin even matches up with the ones that would work. Too bad I don't give a shit about this mod though....
