Also worth noting that while the SPR was being drained at an unpresented rate, oil exports to foreign nations (including the Peoples Republic of China) were spiking to record levels. Record breaking exports occurred in the wake of a 2015 congressional repeal of an oil export ban the effects of which were described in a 2020 GAO report HERE.

Gonna run the highest octane fuel I can find in my new baby! VP Racing sounds about right. Won’t talk about the price though, of the fuel or the engine build. Got to pay to play gentlemen, put up or shut up!IMG_0864.jpg

If I was going to run a racing engine, I’d be all over a Ford Cosworth DFV…assuming I didn’t have to pay for the upkeep!

These things sound epic in person.

I have been exceedingly pleased with my highway mileage since new usually over 20 mpg. Only use 87 octane. In town, not so good, around 15-16.

Low end torque can keep the engine at low RPMs for hours on end.

Crown Vic had far better fuel economy than folks would imagine given the V8 and body on frame.

Meanwhile, turbos in practice tend to result in people having to give it too much throttle, which is why they never come close to EPA estimates.

I totally agree that low end torque can result in better fuel economy. Between better off the line performance in the city, and having enough power to maintain speed on the highway without downshifting, you just don't need to work the engine that hard.

as far as turbo motors; I don't think it's always a matter of people having to give it too much throttle. I think it's just a matter of people driving too aggressively.

The 2.4T we're getting in the 6th generation makes peak torque at 1700 RPM's. With good gearing and conservative driving, it should easily get better mileage than the current engine. But, people like to go fast. So, many drivers probably won't get the expected fuel economy.

I’ve gotten the same economy as the 4Runner in four other engine configurations:

    3.0 V6 turbo
    3.0 inline 6 turbo
    2.5 boxer 4 cyl turbo
    4.6 V8

Probably a few others are more or less the same…it’s almost as if it doesn’t matter what engine and vehicle I drive.

    Very strange.
