Hey all, Elmo the Destroyer is acting up, but I think it could be my fault. I sawed the 90 degree elbow off of the intake and removed the charcoal air filter, but left the normal filter. At normal operation parameters, everything works fine, but there's a weird smell when I floor it. Could this be because of the missing charcoal filter, maybe I'm burning dirty air? My other thought is perhaps I need to change my fluids, because I often shift through the gears manually and this might be wearing out the transmission. Please advise.

this is a typical 4th gen thing, if you google "4runner rotten egg smell" you'll see examples. Its totally normal, if you pay attention you may actually smell it from other cars in front of you. mine did it all the time and never had any issues

Thank you! I plan on doing a small amount of exhaust work (e.g. dumping that weird bend around the rear axle.)
I'll update if that does anything to the smell.

I just rerouted my exhaust and it helps a lot. You smell it more so in the 4r because the exhaust goes straight out the back and wraps up with the wind.

Just joined up but have been on some other forums... Nice work, I plan on the same routing, but contemplating a whole new custom exhaust.
