    Hey folks

Just got my car back after bending 6 valves after a timing belt replacement
Everything was replaced by a mechanic and he's telling me that the ticking I hear will go away after ~300miles of driving because the valves/seals need to seat properly. Because it was sitting for 2 months with no oil running through it all...

Does this make sense to y'all?
I also have CEL light and VSC OFF/ VSC TRAC/ abs lights on. I forgot the specific code he told me but he said it had to do with fuel/ air sensor in bank 1. Which was replaced and should go off after awhile too.

Here's a video of how it sounds

I want to travel and camp and will do Mod's necessary to do this with a 4runner.
Yup, that is loud. I would try using a lifter oil additive like one of the following:
    Liqui Moly Hydraulic Lifter Additive,
    Rislone Engine Treatment Concentrate,
    Marvel Mystery Oil

Here is a ling to some good information on noisy lifters and their cause. You have to read past the product descriptions. https://carpassionate.com/best-oil-additives-for-lifter-noise/

    Ok thanks.

I'm getting contradictory info all over the place... someone told me the V8 2uzfe doesn't have hydraulic lifters? But buckets and shims, which idk if an additive would have any benefit with that system

You just might have to do some research yourself to verify the type of lifters the V8 has. That is an easy google search or call a dealers service department and ask them. Also, I included a link to a page where you could read about which additive, if any, you might consider using. And after the showing of the 5 lifter treatment products, there is a lot of information about lifters and why they click.

I have been googling and reached a dead end. Hence this thread asking for more experienced individuals to chime in... the engine was fine before this work was done on the valves, I doubt an additive would help in this situation but thanks for taking the time to post that. May come in handy in the future.

I think if nothing else, it's the clearance that's the culprit here.

Wow, that sounds like a diesel. How did it bend 6 valves after a timing belt replacement? I would have though a broken timing belt would have caused the bent the valves.

I have that same motor in mine.

The belt didn't break. I was doing preventive (lol) maintenance and it was my first time doing a timing belt, had a family friend (moonlights as mechanic) take a look and he rearranged what I had and started the motor. Which bent the valves. Luckily it was just that and not broken pistons, etc... took it to another mechanic who kindve fixed it, got it to where it sounded less diesel-ly but still no cigar so I said f--- it and took it to the YodaMan in Santa Rosa, CA! And I'm getting my truck back tomorrow and she sounds like the day she left the factory floor!!

PSA If in the Bay Area, and have Toyota problems, definitely look up the YodaMan!!

Mine just made this noise and it was bearings from water pump going out. Replaced water pump and fine now. They thought it was the valves but they are good.

    Hey chewyspark,
My girlfriend just got her 2006 4runner V8 back from her mechanic for the 3rd time (long story but he's a hack).
And now her 4runner sounds like a diesel. Just like yours. Trying to figure out what's wrong with it and how to convince/force the mechanic to either fix it or cover the cost of Toyota fixing it (preferred.)

I posted on another forum and got some answers regarding possible bent valves. Same as yours.
What was the repair that you finally got done to fix it. Obviously new valves and whatnot. Any price estimate of what that would cost? How did you determine 100% that it was bent valves?

    Thanks!

    Here's a video of her 4runner.
