Regearing for 33s

I am planning on putting 285/70/17 tires on my 2013 limited 4Runner next week. I have seen many people saying that they need to regear due to awful mpg and many other factors. Do you all think I would need to regear? Also how much should I expect a regear to cost?

 

Unless the AWD system and gearing in the Ltd is a lot different than the other part time 4WD models, you are not going to need to regear. There's about a million members here with 33s and factory gearing and no complaints whatsoever.

I wouldn't worry about it if going with a tire UP TO 33".

 

33’s here, wouldn’t consider it one bit. Maybe at 35’s, but at 33’s it would be a waste of money.

If you want to maintain decent fuel economy, stick with an SL rated tire, as these tend to run lighter than LT tires. Also, look for tires that run lighter than average.

I am on C rated 285's with 500+ LBS of constant weight. I get 15-19 MPG depending on what I'm doing. With SL rated 285's and less weight, I'm sure I could get 20 on the highway.

If you're towing heavy a lot, then you may want to consider a regear.

 

I do lawn care work and also ride dirt bikes and atvs. My trailer is 800 lbs and the commercial mower I use is another 900lbs. Would you regear for that weight?

 

I wouldn't. I have towed a small trencher a few times with the 285's, and thought it was fine.

If you tow a lot, I'm guessing you're patient enough to live with a 3-4% loss of power. I use S mode to keep it out of overdrive while towing.

You could always do the tires and regear later if you feel it's necessary.

 

My .02, I re-geared with 285's because the transmission was ultimately driving me crazy hunting 4-5th. I did keeping it in S around town and towing but
was not satisfied. Towing my trailer (1200lb) after re-gear it is so much nicer and I gained 2 mpg in town. Some say meh but for me hands down best mod
I have done.

 

I am gonna try without re gear. How much should I expect for a re gear if I decide to?

 

I think even stock the 4Runner could use a slightly taller gearing. I think it’s a great mod, it’s just so damn expensive.

After core charge refund all said and done it was $1900ish. I includes the bushing option and the diff oil so I had it all on hand.

 

What did you get and who did you get it from?

 

4.56's and from EGCS. Did the 3rd member and clamshell core swap so everything was already set to install when they arrived.

 

If you do go gears I second ecgs they did the regear for the Tacoma and it was night and day difference.

 

No one mentioned speedo corrections.....

Used to be you simply removed the speedo gear and replaced with the proper one. Regeared my 89 S-10 back in 91' and it took programmers two or three tries before properly programming my tranny module.
What's involved in reprogramming the speedo on these things?

 

Going through a speed zone and seeing how much the speedo is off by

 

Don't forget a post-it note for your speed correction factors (only kidding, if you're really concerned just use a GPS app on your phone)

 

Where is speed read on the 4Runner? On some cars it's basically at the wheel, via the ABS sensor.

 

Pretty sure it’s the front wheels, so it shouldn’t be an issue.

 

285's actually make the speedometer more accurate than stock. With stock size tires, your speedometer is reading about 3-4% high.

 

^ Yeah I think he meant with gearing. Perhaps in some vehicles, the speedo reads something in the gearing. If a gear was changed, maybe the speedo would read way off even if the truck was going the same speed.

 

Oh, I see. In that case, you'd need a tuner to reprogram the ECU. I'm sure that would be expensive.

 

This^^^now with the 4.56's it is reading about .5 mph slow according to GPS

 

I am on 34s. The truck drives fine but my mpg has gotten bad. 10 mpg if I do 80 mph

 

Will these things do 80 lol

 

Lol. They will do it all day long, but a gallon of gas every 10 minutes

 

Mine was clocked at 98 by my best friend, the Georgia State trooper who let me off with a warning.
