Factory Tinted Back Windows are Peeling

I’ve been wanting to get all my windows tinted for privacy for a minute now. I finally took my truck up to the local tinting shop and told them I wanted the current tint removed and replaced with a fresh set. The man told me he could only add another layer on top, he can’t remove what’s there.

The tint on all the windows in the cargo area has patches missing and is peeling in several places thanks to my father never taking care of the vehicle before he passed it down to me.

I’ve been told that all 4Runners have factory tint and the tint is mixed with the glass. If that was the case, how are there patches of tint missing on my back windows? My father said he never took the vehicle to get professionally tinted, it came this way to him. He bought the car used in 2014 from a Toyota dealership, but he said there weren’t any modifications on it.

Could someone help me figure out what this is that’s peeling on my windows and whether or not this tint can actually be removed? Much help is appreciated! I don’t want to go back to another tinting shop and mistakenly ask them to do something they truly can’t do.

    Welcome!

If it was already 3 years old when he bought it, the previous owner must have added aftermarket tint at some point.

Factory glass is not tinted with film. Granted it's still 2 years newer than yours, but my 2013 does not have this issue with the factory tint.

Unfortunately you may have to put in some elbow grease and scrape it off in order to get it redone correctly.

Thank you! That was kind of what I suspected, but couldn’t find any evidence anywhere in its paperwork from the dealership that it had any modifications on it. Thanks for confirming my suspicions!!
