I have a 2017 Limited with the automatic unlocking door handles. Walk up grab the handle doors unlock, get out touch the grooved area and the doors lock. That is until yesterday. I walked out and like normal the doors opened when I got out of the vehicle I pressed the grooved area and nothing. The passenger side still functions like normal. I tried cleaning the handle with alcohol wipes thinking I may have gotten dirt on the handle some how.

Has anybody experienced this? If so is there a fix besides replacing the handle? I'm not opposed to replacing the handle if that's the fix.
Thanks for any help or advice.

    Oooh look, another mod.....

I have never experienced this, but since it's just the drivers side that has issues and not all doors, that rules out it being a keyfob/battery issue.

A malfunctioning logic board or a break in the wire could cause problems. If the lock and unlock function works intermittently, there could be an electrical short in the system due to the plastic insulation of the wire being worn down. If it has ceased to function at all, the wire could be broken.

Are you able to unlock the drivers side door by pressing the unlock button on the keyfob? If you are, then you have an electrical issue with that door.

Both key fobs work properly. The buttons inside the vehicle also work properly. I'm fairly certain at this point it's the outside driver side door handle

So a quick update for the group. I drove the 4runner from Gallup NM to my house in Kansas yesterday. It's about a 7.5 hour drive. When I got home I got out and out of habit I pressed the sensor area to lock the door, it worked. Then I grabbed the handle to open the door and the vehicle unlocked. I guess what ever gremlin was in the door handle stayed in New Mexico.
