2023 TRD PRO: $15,000 "Market Adjustment" over MSRP

I wouldn't mind paying for the Pro if it came with lower gearing and a bit bigger tires and a decent sized factory lift. But that 1/2 - 3/4 inch lifts seems not even worth it, and don't get me started with the Fox 2.0 shocks which as the cheapest possible Fox offering, seems to be spec'ed just so Toyota can throw the "Fox Shocks" name around.

10k buys a helluva lot of shocks, lift, and tires, and maybe even a re-gear if one doesn't go crazy on the first 3.

 

Thanks. Discussions like these may pressure Toyota to give us a real TRD Pro with a swaybar disconnect, two lockers, a very aggressive gearing, a meaningful lift, and some steel armor and winch package, all covered by warranty. Then I will have no problem giving extra 10-15 grand to them. Until then, happy modding!

An ORP loaded with similar features as the pro (moonroof, mtm, etc…) is 4K cheaper not 10k.

 

Doable. Barebone $35k SR5 built with those specs, and you get a real TRD Pro for $55k. JBL, heated seats and all that should go to Limited or Platinum.

 

I got mine for $48k, fully loaded with MTM, blacked out emblems and nice rock sliders TRD Pro is no less than $57k, without markup

 

Mine was 53k before taxes if I recall but it’s a 22. I guess they increased the price quite a bit in the past 2 years

ps: the rock sliders from Toyota are not nice. Change them with some real ones, you’ll do your truck a favor if you wheel hard

 

My 23 ORP with KDSS, moonroof, etc was stickered at 47k.

If there are Pros available for 51k, I would buy it on the spot, now, cash. As of a few minutes ago the cheapest Pro within 150 miles of me is 57k, and it's stock photos so probably already spoken for by someone on a waiting list. The cheapest one with an actual photo indicating it's on the lot available is 62k.

For 62k I'm getting a GX460, LOL.

 

The sticker on a fully loaded 24 ORP is 51k


When I was looking to buy my 4R I could’ve got a ORP for 48k or the pro for 53k and I sold the pro rack for a good amount of money as soon as I brought it home (I was gonna get an aftermarket rack regardless of the trim).
I also wanted dual climate control, and pro wheels. And if I got the ORP I would have spent over 1k to change the tires right away (nitto are not the best but they get by until i get Toyo at3 or falken wildpeak aournd 40-50k miles) + the wheels eventually.
I know there’s better suspension than the fox but I’m actually really satisfied with them. So my choice was a no brainer

 

that's the 2024 prices. I bet the Pro is a couple grand more than comparable 2023 Pros and in turn another couple of grand more than your prices.

I was new to Toyota world, I didn't know you can get a TRD Offroad too, it is cheaper than Premium. You live you learn

 

It's not like we have much of a choice. For the last year or two Toyota is not send the US any amount of regular ORs. Within 150 miles of my location there are 145 ORP in stock or in transit, 0 Off Road. We can't really pick and choose at this point in time.

 

Yes I was actually surprised you didn’t get that. It’s got the exact same off road features as the ORP (crawl control, rear locker, manual transfer case) without all the fancy interior stuff

 

In AZ they’re not super popular but they exist.
There are 13 in the Phoenix area. A lot less than ORP but better than 0!

 

Most if not all of the time if you call the actual dealer they will tell you it's already reserved for a customer on a wait list. the OR has a lot of people wanting it due to the lower cost and a bit simpler for modding.

Eh, I like my two ORPs, one lives in the garage as the garage queen and one is our daily. I figure between the two that's the last vehicles we buy for a decade or two.

 

So why did you buy a 4Runner if the Rubicon is so much better?

And why can’t you acknowledge that not everyone looking at a TRD Pro is only looking for off-road worthiness? Some buyers want all the non off-road upgrades that Toyota includes and much prefer the TRD Pro vs the Limited. If Toyota offered even more off-road capability in another trim, that would be great too, but Toyota is not trying to be a Wrangler, it’s a supremely better overall package that is not as capable off-road.

You seem to believe your personal definition of TRD Pro should be is all that is valid for everyone else. It’s that arrogant, self absorbed attitude that is the only reason I don’t simply acknowledge your nicely built out rig (for your purposes) as a great alternative to the TRD Pro for others with similar priorities. There are plenty of others right here on this board that have done similar, yet they grasp the concept that not every buyer has those same exact narrow priorities and don’t go constantly trying to prove they are smarter and better than everyone else. In any case, I realize you can’t see beyond your personal preferences so I won’t bother putting out anymore facts you’ll just continue to ignore.

 

I could have gotten a new GX460 for not much more than a Pro. Cost wasn’t the deciding factor as it’s easier to get those under sticker. Really considered a black line special edition in nori green.

They’re great trucks with a better engine/transmission but they’re also a different experience than the 4Runner. If I was older and wanted something smoother for the road, that or a 200 series would be my choice over any 4Runner trim.

Cons of the GX imo: ridiculous front bumper, annoying rear barn door, no sliding rear window, no cool colors I liked (beyond maybe nori green), not that much better performance wise despite the V8/6spd, almost too refined for my taste. Also, for whatever reason, they seem to depreciate a bit more than 4Runners despite being nicer trucks for most buyers lol never understood that.

My cars aren’t really A to B necessity purchases nor do I need some crazy super capable off roader. I just buy what I enjoy driving for various reasons, bright orange Pro fit the bill perfectly….although would have paid more for it to have the V8/6spd lol.

 

Let’s be honest though….the most off roading many rubicon buyers will do is climbing the curb at Starbucks lol at least that’s the sense I’ve gotten from chatting with owners of some of those modified urban crawlers.

Which is cool, not my thing but guess they like that experience without needing the capability. But if the 4Runner was even like an unmodified Rubicon, I wouldn’t have bought it.

Love the Pro for being an off the shelf OEM package that adds some cool features I want + remains a good compromise between street driving and off road duties without me having to install anything on it, especially aftermarket shit.

 

I looked in to getting the ORP trim and then adding and modding what I wanted. ORP pricing was going to be $50k vs $57k. By the time I added wheels and tires, suspension/lift, Pro grille, black front/rear bumper covers I was already back over $57k. Not really sure why so many balk at the Pro price. If you balk at those with markups I get it. But those aren’t necessary. Find one at msrp and move on. Also dual zone climate control was a big feature for me that I really wanted. So I agree, I will buy from the factory line and enjoy the added value that remains in the truck.

Not to mention the headache and time that sometimes comes along with modifications. There’s almost always something that doesn’t quite work right or breaks or just plain doesn’t work. lol.

 

There’s no “silver bullet” here, the best answer is really “it depends”

The TRD Pro is a perfectly fine choice at MSRP depending on your needs.

But, if you’re planning to swap out the suspension half the reason of what makes the Pro a Pro is out the window unless auto headlights and auto AC matter to you.

Then there’s the roof basket and the TRD exhaust.

If a lift is in order, then the roof basket just gets in the way of your home garage and some malls parking structure height limits.

What deterred me from buying a Pro was:

- $10k markup at least vs a 5k discount on the ORP + the MSRP difference. We are talking near $23k difference.
- I would remove the roof basket and the TRD exhaust.

The Pro wasn’t making much sense to me at that price range and those quote and quote “problems for me”

If you’re leaving it with the stock suspension and you bought it at MSRP - it’s the best 4Runner.

To each his or her own. If you want a TRD Pro go for it, but I hope folks aren’t still paying dealer markup on any vehicle, Pro or not. No vehicle is worth paying over sticker in my opinion.

 

I bought my 2021 Lunar Rock Pro in May of 2021 when pricing above MSRP was just starting to increase quickly. I originally wanted a MGM ORP then decided I wanted a MGM Pro because I simply did not want to deal with the modding process. I have no mechanical skills and I didn't want to deal with the process of the decisions, the time, the logistics, the expense, etc. If I had gone the ORP route I definitely would have replaced the tires, wheels and added a modest quality suspension in short order. Which is probably a $5,000 expense. So, I rationalized that I was paying $10,000 more than a ORP for about $7,000 in features and color that I liked and some that I didn't!

Twice I went to look at and purchase a 2021 MGM Pro and they both were gone by the time I arrived and I had called that morning to look at them. The first one was at MSRP and the second one was $2,000 above MSRP. Finally got a chance to see a Lunar Rock 4R on the road and I was convinced I wanted to go with that color. After searching multiple times daily in our large metropolitan area (MD, DC, VA - and PA & WV) for several months, a Lunar Rock Pro popped up at a local dealership that had been previously ordered by someone else that had found one already and it was available. I was the first to inquire and it was just posted online that day. MSRP was $52,000 and I paid $54,000. They easily could have sold it for $5,000 above MSRP the next day and they were selling for $10,000 above MSRP shortly thereafter. I have no regrets about paying $2,000 above MSRP for a 2021 Lunar Rock Pro that I have enjoyed the hell out of for 30 months and 52,000 miles. I got $14,000 for a trade-in that I was hoping I would get $10,000. The interest rate on the loan is 2.75%. I am self employed and was able to write off 40% of the cost of the 4R. So everyone's wants, needs and levels of affordability are different. Would a base SR5 work just fine for 95% of us - of course! But, there is a reason why there are different trims, colors and choices - hopefully you made the right choice for you!

Nor do I like the Pro roof rack or exhaust! The only thing I have done to this 4R in 30 months is remove the Predator Tube Steps and I am about to add new stock size Toyo OC AT3's. The apparent fact that Pro's have a higher resale value is a added bonus, but was a non-factor in my decision making since I plan to keep this 4R for 16 years and I will be 75 then. I'm not geeky about this thing - it's just a freaking car that I have been very pleased with that has a very high level of functionality as it takes me to the many outdoor activities that I like to pursue!

 

The month of your purchase in May, 2021 is interesting. I purchased my 21' ORP/MR in mid-March of 2021. MSRP on mine was 44K. I paid 42K and 2.975APR. Plus they gave me as a trade for my 10' FJ Cruiser over 50% of what I paid new. Took delivery of my 4R in early May of 21' But made the deal in Mid-March. If I had waited just 1-2 more weeks I likely would have had to pay MSRP. Talk about coming in at the 11th hour. LOL

I was seriously ready to pull the trigger in March of 2021 (if you could find one) and the pricing on the Pro's were just starting to go above MSRP at about 70% of the dealers I spoke with. By May just about every dealer was above MSRP on the Pro's. In fact, the dealership I bought from told me in March they did not charge above MSRP. I wanted to bring that up to them in May when I sent in my deposit, but I did not want to take a chance on losing out on this Lunar Rock Pro at $2,000 above MSRP which I knew was a "fair" deal at the time.

I am eyeing the 460intently, considering to get one before the 23s are all gone, we have a pickup that we no longer use and I keep telling the Mrs I am really tempted....

 

these dealers are completely ridiculous and greedy!

 

rewind to 2017 when i was on the hunt for my Cement PRO. took me 5 months to even find one that wasn't already sold or having a crazy markup. after all those months i finally found one that was in transit to Freedom Toyota in PA over by Cabela's for those who know. they had one coming in with no ones name on it. with no options but floor mats which was all i wanted. no markup, just MSRP!!!! put a $500 deposit and it came in 2 weeks later. still have it today and absolutely love it. one of the best buying experiences there at Freedom ive ever had too
