I am looking into buying a 4th generation 4Runner. I was wondering if having a full time 4wd or an awd vehicle kills the gas mileage, or if it is pretty consistent with the 15-18 mpg they claim. Also wondering if having a part time 4wd is better than a full time or awd. Ultimately my goal is to have a 4wd vehicle that doesn’t get 10 mpg and can get me through snow and not cause me to fill up extremely often.

Both models should be in that 15-18 range off the lot. You start losing mpg's as you add more weight like armor or bigger tires. Get the one that suits your needs/wants the best.

I get like 13-15 city driving and 16-19 freeway driving, with the V8 AWD. Not great lol

    I get 14 combined after steel bumper, 200 lbs of skid plates; and 34 inch KO2s. And I don't have a V8 and full time 4wd :(

My 2007 has a V6 and I’ve tracked the mileage via the Fuelly app for the last 40K miles. Average for that time is 17.3.

I had an '03 V8 with full time 4wd. Overall, I probably averaged around 17 MPG over the 179K miles I put on it.

If snow is a concern, full time 4wd will be better than part time 4wd.
