The FJ cruiser has no business having the letters F&J in its name.

I agree with the FJ Cruiser as a second choice to the 4Runner, I agree with the comment that the car market is getting softer everyday. My local Toyota dealership has discounted all trim levels of their 4Runner inventory by $2,000 to $3,000, $2,500 off the TRD ORP. The base SR5 2wd is $39,500. After the first of the year the average Joe is scratching for money after Christmas. January and February are good months to purchase used. I would wait a while for the recession to hit, layoffs, bankruptcy, divorce, will benefit you in a big way.

FJ Cruiser or FJ series Landcruiser, as mentioned earlier?

Big difference. One is a legendary off-roader, and the other is a piss poor attempt to capitalize on the reputation of the other.

Yes, let the hate run through you. Lol

I agree, FJ is dumb, which was why it was a sales flop.

I'm going to hold strong that 80 series is the answer for the OP, AND that the 80 was the best 4x4 Toyota ever offered in North America.

No problem, glad to help. I strongly recommend the 80, in fact I'm thinking of selling mine and getting an 80. The 80 just gives me the fizz, as James May would say. Everyone has a 5th gen, I'm getting sick of seeing them everywhere haha.

Saying an engine is bulletproof and that it may require a rebuild at 200k is about as contradictory as you can get.

Maybe a set of plugs and a coolant flush and it's ready to go another 200k.

I don't even know if it's worthy of being called a fake jeep. :D

Agreed about the 80 series. Last of the FJ's, at least in the US. It's a great platform.

Although, an earlier 5th gen might be easier to maintain.

    Oooh look, another mod.....

Well, Fake Jeep is kind of accurate. I googled "Why is it called FJ?", they F indicated it was a gas engine (you got a B if it was diesel) and J stood for Jeep.

So it's a Gas Jeep aka Fake Jeep.

The F didn't stand for gasoline. It meant that it had an F series engine, which happened to be gasoline engines. And, there hasn't been an F series inline 6 gasoline engine in a Land cruiser in the US since the 80 series.

And, yes, the Landcruiser originated as a copycat of a Willy's Jeep.

But, the FJ Cruiser doesn't hold a candle to the old FJ Landcruisers.

So, is it safe to assume that you think the FJ Cruiser is the red-headed retarded step-brother of the FJ LandCruiser?

No. I don't have anything against redheaded step brothers.

I actually don't have anything against the FJ cruiser, either.

I just get annoyed when people talk about it like it's some kind of legendary off-roader, while completely overlooking the fact that it's just a goofy looking shortened 4Runner.

I also thought Toyota wimped out on them. They could have made it a real competitor to the Wrangler, but they listened to the pencil pushers instead.

And the original "BJ" LandCruiser had a six cylinder based on a 1930s Chevrolet design, they even had parts interchangeability.

Weird. I would not have thought Toyota would have used the "B" designation for two totally different types of engines.

These predate that, they came out around 1950 or 1951 if I recall correctly. I think they were even literally called the "Toyota Jeep BJ" until they were sued by whoever owned Jeep at the time. Those had the straight six gas engine based on the old stovebolt Chevy 6 of the 1930s.

I think in the '60s when they came out with the FJ, that's when the FJ = gas, BJ = diesel came about.

By the 50's, the BJ was actually a diesel.

Sounds like the B series I6 went from 1937-1947. So, the B series diesel probably came around soon after that. The F series I6 gasoline engine came around 1948 and was "based loosely" on a GM design.

The letters in Toyota chassis codes are based on what engine series was used not necessarily fuel type.

FJ meant gas because they used an F series I6 gasoline engine

BJ meant diesel because, by then, the B series was an I4 diesel.

The letter in the chassis codes refers specifically to the motor series used, not necessarily the type of fuel.

The owner probably did lots of cross country road trips with it. They thought they needed a Toyota 4X4 for that. I bet their biggest wheeling adventure was some dirt road. Look at me, I got 34 inch tires, BP-51 EMU lift, two spare tires, steel bumper and a winch to drive to Lake Tahoe :p

Two solid axles will disturb Toyota's business plans. They would have to develope a unique truck to sell how many, like 50,000 a year? Not worth it. In the 90's they were selling 80 series and Lexus LX so that made sense

They wouldn't have to develop much, since they still offer SFA Landcruisers in other markets. Adapting those platforms to meet US safety and emissions standards is probably the real issue.

Well, the F never actually stood for "fake", so that's definitely not an issue.

Wrangler is built by Stellantis now, so expect it to be as dependable as an Alfa Romeo. Don't be surprised if your brand new Wrangler dies and leaves you stranded 10 miles up a mountain. If Toyota today fakes a Wrangler, I would sell my house to get one lol

This was definitely a consideration earlier this year when I started thinking I wanted to buy a Wrangler to replace the 4Runner. But, the wind noise was really the biggest turn off.

See the thing is, why we need 4X4s, because we want to explore wilderness and get away from civlization. We get winches, skid plates, gas cans, spare tires and traction boards. But we forget the most important thing, a dependable vehicle. I will be nervous to take an Alfa Romeo Wrangler Rubicon to Death Valley, no matter how capable it is offroad. I can't trust the build quality and the electronics in that thing

Who is this "we" you're speaking of?

I'd bet that a lot of the people on this forum are here at least partially because of the 4Runner's reliability. Nobody wants to deal with unnecessary trail repairs, or being stranded in the middle of nowhere.

If I thought the Wrangler was as reliable as the 4Runner, it certainly would have made my decision to stick with the 4Runner more difficult.

But, I still think the Jeep's reliability issues are blown out of proportion here sometimes.
